I think I may have seen this live when it happened, in January (?) 1987. In a live trail for The Tube on Channel 4,Jools Holland implored viewers to watch the programme or be an "ungroovy f_cker". I think he was suspended for a few weeks and The Tube ended after that series.
My question is, does anyone know if footage of this minor furore exists?
Thanks for any help.

I believe this has been discussed before but I can't find the thread. From memory the master for the trail, assuming one was ever made, does not exist but I believe that VHS copies may indeed be out there. Please correct me if I've got any if this wrong.

I did wonder if Channel 4 kept a duty log copy for it, unless that was only on VHS.

Ah, OK, thanks. Have found the original thread on here through a Google search. I guess it does exist. Somewhere.

Didn’t the trail air on ITV during Children’s ITV? So it would exist if someone had recorded the children’s programs off air that day.
It’s a well known piece of TV, someone must have recorded it at the time (possibly accidentally) and realised it was worth keeping

Surprisingly scant and conflicting info on the net. Looking through the newspaper archives it looks as though this would have been broadcast on Friday 23rd January 1987 (definitely no later than that date, possibly a week earlier) at 5:15pm as CITV came to end following "Bellamy's Bugle" with the ITV regions then showing their own programmes in the pre-news slot. The Mirror reports on Saturday 24th that Jools had been banned for six weeks, The Express reports the same info on Wednesday the 28th but adds that two Tyne Tees executives had left the company.

I had just left C4 Presentation when it happened ...but if it was transmitted, it was only in the Tyne Tees area as a regional opt-out and not transmitted on C4 or ITV network. Someone once said it was audio only as well so might even have been radio though not too sure how that would have happened.

I'm almost certain that the footage does not exist.
Reason being - when the insert was but into the ITV kids hour schedule, it was patched in live. Jools said what he said. Then the fuore happened. When they tried to get the footage to find out what was said and how, they found that no-one had taken an online recording at the studio or even at ITV, so they could not attack or defend him. It was clear what he said and how he said it, but since no-one had a tape, they had to rely on witnesses - of which there were quite a few.
Also this turned into a front-page story over the following week, so if someone had recorded it at home, that would have come to light at the time, for no other reason than the papers would have paid a bob or two for it.

From 19 minutes 20 here it's covered. Sadly the footage isn't included but according to Jools some guy in 'Oxford' did record it. Then we see Jimmy Nail say f**k. youtu.be/P-Aw_d3Cigo

From the very wonderful Royston Mayoh:-
""The ‘incident’ occurred(*) in 1986 and was just one small part of the many elements leading up to my SACKING on January 23 1987. This ‘SUMMARY DISMISSAL’ was well out of order! And a few months after, I was awarded both an official APOLOGY and a rather satisfying TAX-FREE CASH PAYOFF (which bought me the house I am sitting in this very morning!). The details of this most upsetting part of my career are laid out in my forthcoming book ( title yet TBC) and are mainly about a show I Produced and Directed for TTTV and CH4 on New Year's Eve with Jools as the host. But the incident you are highlighting here took place a few weeks BEFORE the Show (but had nothing to do with me!) However: It STARTED during a rehearsal day for a regular LIVE ‘TUBE’ some SIX MONTHS EARLIER) JOOLS was in the Studio 5 Green Room , relaxing , when a floor manager ( no! Not Fizz) burst into the Green Room and said to Jools ‘...they want a quick LIVE 15 second promo spot for TONIGHTS show... And it's in the next 5 minutes... Are you up for it , or shall I tell them you are indisposed?...’ Jools said ‘... Yes! That's OK’ and ran to Studio 5. They were all ready for him, put him on his mark, quickly mic’d him up, and someone shouted ‘ ...coming to us in 10 seconds...’ After a ‘normal’ count down, the RED light went on, and JOOLS performed a perfect 15-second promo spot; however, the floor manager ( at around 12 seconds in) showed Jools the STRETCH sign... Jools, dutifully, ‘stretched - and Stretched - and Stretched until he was a sweaty mess talking jibberish! The entire studio suddenly burst into peels of laughter! IT HAD BEEN A WIND-UP!! Now wind the clock forward Five Months or so! Same scenario in the Green Room!! Jools AGAIN ran into the Studio ( knowing it was another WIND-UP). The count down happened ( just like before), and on zero, Jools delivered the line ‘... If you want to be a groovy &*£#&£er watch the TUBE tonight at 6:45!...’ he shoved Two fingers up to the camera and walked off, saying in a loud voice, ‘...You don't get me twice!...’ Unfortunately, it HAD been LIVE to air between BUGS BUNNY and the BIRTHDAYS! Everyone had forgotten the silly wind up months before , and anyway it was a different crew and different floor manager. JOOLS was nothing more than an INNOCENT victim of a stupid Studio Prank ( and there were LOTS of those in those days!) This ‘groovy’ event was added to the list of indiscretions that the ex-Home Secretary LEON BRITTAN had lied to the PM - MARGARET THATCHER! about, who then asked for a ‘head to roll’. It was my head that rolled! To find out how ROBIN SINTON, a senior video engineer, proved my innocence, you’ll have to wait for my book to come out!""
(*) - the lead-up to the incident started in 1986; the broadcast was in 1987.... as is clear.

I saw this at the time purely by chance. The TV was on in the background and caught my attention as I would watch the Tube fairly regularly. My memory of it was he'd actually completed the trailer and there was one of those moments where the presenter pauses for the camera to cut away. Jools then looked away and said "you groovy f*#*#*s" It was definitely "you" and plural.

Well Royston's memories do indicate it was ITV only, possibly only on Tyne Tees (who made The Tube) - as Channel 4 certainly didn't show Bugs Bunny or do birthdays!! But nice find Ray!
