I can't speak for others but for me the internet has nothing to do with it. In the "old days", fans of archive TV used to share their knowledge via publishing / writing to fanzines and attending get-togethers / conventions etc. We did it for the love of the subject and just wanted to learn more. These days everyone wants to be a businessman and sell the results of their hobby-time researching. I'm in it for furthering the cause of archive TV and helping it gain the recognition it deserves. Details of popular programmes are often available online, but it's hardly the sole purpose of the Kal Guides to list only holdings for Who, Doomwatch, Z-Cars and the like.)

Well I was making a general point, which I think is both true and applicable in a wide sense, although not obviously applicable to everyone (while you may not have been affected in such a way by the 'net, Mr Cole clearly has been).

And I'm sure we'd all agree that everyone on here is in it for furthering the cause of archive TV and helping it gain the recognition it deserves.

I said in my post 'useless for serious research'. I expressed an opinion. You refer to one of my posts as 'nonsense at worst' - isn't that rude too?

These books are good for a rough pointer, but anyone writing a book or researching programme material would need to check with the archive concerned. To give a few examples.

Unfortunately, the guides do say if a programme exists, but they do not say (with a few exceptions) where they exist or if a viewing copy exists.

In many cases duplicate copies exist in different archives and these aren't listed either.

In other cases, live programmes which were never recorded as listed as if junked.

In many cases programmes listings are incomplete and extracts and odd reels from other editions aren't listed.

Regarding your 'Rupert the Bear' query. I cannot think of a good reason why anyone would want to know which episodes of this exist, unless you're writing a book on the subject or involved with a retrospective programme. Knowing that a sample exist should be enough to satisfy idle curiosity, so why would you need to know exact information on this series?

To be fair to the Kal guides here though, I don't think anyone said they were the final word on TV research. They merely offer the best starting point for such work to begin in a "one stop" way. Most people that are fans just want to know if a show basically exists or not and they do this very thoroughly indeed. There are a few things in there that could be improved on though, agreed (e.g. the listing of "live" programming as junked, whereas in fact it was just never recorded).

As far as Rupert Bear is concerned, it has it's fans the same as any show does and I think you'd be surprised at the amount of interest this series has generated here in the past. People want precise info on most things - one reason why sites like this exist - and although not to everyone's taste (as with e.g. Doctor Who, Monty Python or Z-Cars), it has it's following and people out there who care about it's continued existence in the archives.

And what will they do with that info? Assuming they are a fan, knowing if 'Rupert and the Obsessive-compulsives' or whatever exists isn't a great deal of use to them. If might give them a glimmer of hope that they could see the episode one day, but thats about it. Now, if they were hunting down prints or researchoing a book, that might be useful. Even then, that particular series was a fairly consistent Childrens series and there probably isn't much to be gained by having a full set, except completism.

Laurence - I agree with you completely that we are all in this together, to further the cause of old TV. I have made not a single penny from the Guides over the years, indeed we spend vast sums on train fares, visiting archives, etc. I am sorry if you see it as emotional blackmail if I mention our support of the RNLI as a worthy cause. I did not mean to make anyone feel guilty, but if it encourages just one person to give extra money to a charity then I don't mind, because the RNLI are a fantastic charity who help us enormously with our events, including making us afternoon tea nowadays. They are an essential part of our team. :-)

Our events are free to attend, run regularly, have good guests and need more attenders, come along!

I regard the db as a social history project, and it does list where stuff was live and therefore not recorded originally, to clarify that point. I agree that we do not list duplicates or viewing copies or which archive it is in, but I have a day job and we have enough difficulty keeping track of what we do have.

Can I also point out that whilst I am seen as the figurehead of Kal, there are many other people involved. The db was written by an outside company and they have copyright over it, and have talked to the BFI etc about commercially making money from it. They give it to us free, but can sell it anywhere so I cannot make judgements on their behalf. When the time is right perhaps it will go online with the disclaimer that it will contain errors (we know that the RT/TVT are not always accurate, and we make mistakes all the time), it will be a starting point for future generations, but for now, the books fund our events and the RNLI so we will keep it that way.

That concludes my postings on this thread, since I rarely post on the internet anyway, and I'm sure nothing I say will change our personal opinions on the issues, but if a moderator would like to email me privately about any other archive holdings you want I will do my best to provide what we have. :-)

Well for me this is very interesting information as I do know of a foreign station still showing Rupert in the late 80's and may still have episodes in their stores. It is good to know what is missing and what survives so I do not need to waste my time looking for something that already exists safe and sound.

I've always been surprised that Rupert The Bear suffered so much junking seeing that it was a reasonably expensive programme to make and had high re-sale possibilities for. I thought this series was 'un-catalogued- rather than junked and the 'junked' episodes were quite likely not to have been catalogued yet....

Eh, I didn't - you said they were useless, I pointed out that it was rude. That's not misquoting, that's highlighting the pertinent part of the original post.

These books are good for a rough pointer, but anyone writing a book or researching programme material would need to check with the archive concerned. To give a few examples.

And this thread - and the specific and very kind offer from Chris tp provide info not otherwise available - was nothing to do with writing a book but merely updating the site with more accurate information and further listings of archival material.

Unfortunately, the guides do say if a programme exists, but they do not say (with a few exceptions) where they exist or if a viewing copy exists.

In many cases duplicate copies exist in different archives and these aren't listed either.

In other cases, live programmes which were never recorded as listed as if junked.

In many cases programmes listings are incomplete and extracts and odd reels from other editions aren't listed.

All of which, if true, is pertinent to this thread, how? Like I said you interrupted to provide a rude and unconstructive opinion which contrbuted nothing of worth to the topic under discussion - but lack of constructive opinion does seem to be a major factor in your posts in general.

Regarding your 'Rupert the Bear' query. I cannot think of a good reason why anyone would want to know which episodes of this exist, unless you're writing a book on the subject or involved with a retrospective programme. Knowing that a sample exist should be enough to satisfy idle curiosity, so why would you need to know exact information on this series?

Do you actually know what this site is about (going by a previous thread on which you seeme determined to suggest film collectors were wasting their time, I suspect not)?

Everyone who comes here has some interest in finding missing archival TV - knowing that a home video they have of Rupert the Bear is in a better condition than the archival version is useful information it seems to me. Or do you disagree?

In which case - why are you here at all (that's a serious question by the way)?

If you read my original post carefully, I make the comment that most people will automatically go for something free online (if available). I did not advocate the idea that everything should be free online.

Actually you said "I'm sure most people would rather seee it online for free than pay many hundreds of pounds for a set of guides which go out of date!" which seems to me as thought you are advocating exactly that.
