I'm sure most people would rather seee it online for free than pay many hundreds of pounds for a set of guides which go out of date! Ultimately, electronic access is the way ahead. The Kaleidoscope guides are usless for serious researchers as they do not allow relational searches. If they were set up as an online facility with a subscription that would be a step forward.

Having a picture of Beryl Reid on an adult man's profile (you are an adult and a man I think?) to me, is an unattractive way of presenting yourself, but I'm not condeming you for having it!

I made a fair point that the Kscope guides are quickly out of date, cost a lot of money and the information is available online for free (in most cases). Online or CD versions are the way forward.

Seems a fair point. I supported the earlier printings of the Kal guides in the '90s and i'd love to upgrade to the new versions. But they are way out of my price reach.

I agree that by there very nature these books do go out of date because archives change their mind all the time, stuff is found, stuff is mislaid, new shows are made, stuff is transferred to new formats. However, we try to put this info in the public domain and only a few years back people eagerly bought the Guides because the information was nowhere to be found.

Then archives started opening up and lots of people like our good friend Andrew Martin began to help people online and now we are all the healthier for it.

However, people may have noticed that many of these official TV company databases are not available to the general public and probably never will be. This material is normally kept back from online free access, because it has commercial sensitivity. It is the same reason why we don't put our information online.

I'm sure people would love to have our books online and reduce the need to buy them, but there are good commercial reasons why people don't do this in the publishing world. Publishers sell books to make money. J.K. Rowling does not offer her books as free downloads, many other non-fiction books are not free downloads, authors want payments, publishers have to make money. In our case, the profit from books goes to run our events and the rest goes to the RNLI. Would you rather have free online books and no events/no charity fund-raising?

Furthermore, since Richard, Simon, me, Andrew Martin and a host of other people have spent years assembling these texts, why should we distribute them on the internet freely where they can be pirated and accessed and copied many times and plagarised? I know internet security is improving but piracy is a major problem still and will continue to be so. Anything we put online could be cracked and pirated I'm sure. We are not experts in internet security, greater people than us have been hacked into and ripped off.

Over the years I have seen my work plagarised on many websites without any ackowledgement to Kal, so I don't want to make it easier for people to do this, rather I would like to make it harder.

My final point refers to the issue of cross-relational searches. Granted the books don't give you that facility and I wish they could, it is excellent. However, to date our books are used by Comedy Connections, Drama Connections, ITV Factual North, ITN ARchive Sales, Fremantle Archive Sales, the BBC Library, Granada Ventures, several independent companies, the BFI, William Gallagher and the Radio Times. Unofficially, they are in most archives on shelves and have been used many times. They find a use for them, despite having no relational searches, so clearly they are useful. Others just like to read them. So £130 for the new ITV Drama Guides is high I agree, but they are massive books and have had great reviews. The Saint colour box set was circa £70, buy The Persuaders aswell and you have the same equivalent price bracket. People on the internet spend hundreds/thousands of pounds every year on DVDs or ebay items. One Radio Times with a DW cover can cost you £200. I think £130 is reasonable for over five years of work, including many hours spent accessing paperwork that cannot be found in Brum library or at Westminster.

We all have choices, if you choose not to buy the books I have no problem with that, but just appreciate there are good commercial reasons why we make the decisions we do.

(1) We bought the guides then because they were AFFORDABLE, Chris. I'd do the same now if they still were. I'm a long time fan of archive TV but the books on this subject that I want most of all (the Kal guides) are out of my reach now.

(2) I thought we were all fans and in this because of our love of the subject rather than because it's a job. I know you started out that way too, Chris. I have spent many many hours researching programmes at Caversham, the BFI library etc. etc. over the years, gathering info because it's my interest (I know you have too). I have amassed reams of info on TV, which I am happy to share with others freely who have the same interest. I'm not going to get posessive about my efforts as I believe that info on archive TV should be in the public domain. It's what us fans have felt was needed all along. It's still the one medium that is hard to get accurate data on the history of.

I am quite happy to share my love and enthusiasm of the subject, but I am not prepared to put it all online and thereby remove the source of income that we give the RNLI and our events every year. THAT is why we keep it in book form. I take no money from this venture so don't make me sound like I'm a money-grabbing commercialist because I aint. And as for 'affordable' - our events are free but we don't get many punters, so how much more affordable can we make it? In fact, we haven't seen you for a long time at the events.

Perhaps it is out of your price range - when people approach us at events about this, Simon will normally print them off an updated old-style Kal guide for a small sum, that is what you should be doing mate.

As for your research you have collected over the years - bung it all online and we can have a look at it, it may fill some gaps we have. Then we can pinch it, stick it in our db and claim that we did the research. Sadly that is what most people would do if we stuck ours online. :-)

The remark about the RNLI reeks of emotional blackmail though, Chris. It's the same as those people that very firmly accost me in the street and try to get me to direct debit to "X" charity. I'm sure they do good work but we don't need to be reminded of how needy of your support they are (as all charities are).

The worry you voiced about sticking the data online and letting other people claim it's their own work contradicts your first words though, Chris. If people want to do that with my work, then...sigh...so be it. I just want the info out there and don't really care about that. It's the open access to the stuff that is what I believe in. I don't care who gets credit. It's all childish. Life's too short.

The idea of printing off an updated "old style" guide is a great idea though, Chris (I had no idea you were doing this). It's something I was suggesting last year before the new guides came out. That's all we ask for really! You should publicise this fact more as I reckon you'd get a lot of takers.

I didn't spend anything like £130 on DVDs last month (or the last SIX months). But for those that do, what you get for your money is a lot of the actual TV shows in pristine quality that we have wanted for years (the shows themselves being what it's all about). In equivalent terms, I couldn't justify spending £130 on just one book (no matter how meticulously researched). All down to personal choice though, as ever. You pays yer money...

Expressed that way, it is a reasonable point, although if the information about subtitles on Rupert the Bear is available online, I'd love to know where - that being the topic under discussion that Mr Cole unhelpfully interrupted.

More generally, I personally think it's slightly odd that the advent of the internet seems to have convinced everyone that everything should be free and immediately available, regardless of who has done the actual work.

His general tone, however, leaves a lot to be desired, IMO.
