I'm aware that playwrite, Joe Orton's appearence on the Eamonn Andrews show in 1967 still survives. Does anyone know if it is just a clip or the entire show?
I have 2 60's Eamonn Andrews shows on tape, and was of the opinion that they were the only surviving shows. Be nice to be proved wrong! Cheers Simon

Yes, how did you come by these? They aren't commercially available. You also mean 'playwright'.

Gary, Apparently the clip was shown on an edition of "Reputations" about Kenneth Williams. So it's out there somewhere.

This is fascinating. I'd never heard of this existing either. Perhaps it's just a clip? Does anyone know more details? Is this a missing item in private hands or have Canal + got this in the ABC archive?

I saw the Reputations programme where this clip was shown and nearly jumped out of my seat. Wherever it's from, it was in lovely, pristine 2" VT quality. I've seen the ABC archive listings and I don't remember it being in there, but I'll look again. Meanwhile, the Harry H Corbett edition of the EA show was recovered from a Shibaden tape. One of the best looking Shibaden recordings I've seen, admittedly.

Positive proof that a 2" video tape can still provide excellent picture quality after nearly forty years!
The Eamonn Andrews show cetainly had more than the fair share of sixties notables on the guest list. Therefore, historically, a very important show.
If the NFTVA haven't got any of these shows, then it is Canal+ that would be in possession. If, on the other hand, it was Rediffusion, then it would be Archbuild.
Good news about another show from this series turning up.
Yours,

This isn't a recent discovery - the 'Reputations' programme was first shown in 1998 or 99.

What i'm wondering is does Dick Fiddy know about this item? Seems too important to overlook. Mind you, if it's on VT (which is unusual - although not unheard of - for ABC material) then it won't reside with Canal +, as they only have the stuff that survives on t/r.

I second that Laurence! Yeah Dick, how about an Orton night at the NFT with the full Eamonn show? Very best Si x

Yes please.
His TV plays have been shown recently (3 years ago?) as part of the BFI's Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and very good they are too - Sheila Hancock and Edward Woodward in Mr Sloane are particularly good.
Would the Andrews show be they only surviving film footage of Orton? I know there's a radio interview (there's snippets on the BBC website) but I don't know of anything else.
Other possible programmes for a season include the Lahr/Arena doc from the early 80s. Nice if the Call My Bluff turned up.
Oh and it's the 40th anniversary of his murder next year - maybe not something to 'celebrate' but a hook to hang a season on.

With support from Lee Hays and Pete Seeger?
