This is a long-shot, I realise, but you never know. I'm currently co-writing a book on the history of The John Barry Seven. The band appeared on TYLS on four occasions, and sadly none of their episodes are known to exist. In 1961, this photo appeared in a concert brochure/programme, and it's believed it shows them "performing" on TYLS. Not much to go on, but I wondered if anybody who watched the programme regularly can say if the set looks as though it might be from TYLS? Thanks. Attachments:

From the photo the set looks a bit big and grand for a TYLS programme...TYLS was a bit like TOTPs of it's day in which the fast turn around of pop hits each week meant there was no time to think about or build elaborate sets and so (as TOTPS) the sets had little depth as the one in the photo seems to show.. ..but I could be completely wrong. Looks like something that maybe? come from the movie 'A Matter of Who', which is now forgotten and quite obscure in the UK but seems to have a bit of a cult following elsewhere? . Thanks for that, Peter. I only have vague memories of watching TYLS so you could well be right. It's definitely not a film set, though, they only appeared in three and I've seen them all (their A Matter of WHO part was a house party scene). They appeared on several other TV shows, though, most of which I've never seen. We do know it was something before September 1961 because John Barry is still on trumpet, and the only one that could really fit apart from TYLS is "The Tin Pan Alley Show" from ATV in 1960. I wonder if that still exists?

All That Jazz *could* be a contender, despite the JB7's appearances being filmed in November '61, because JB did say he might consider appearing again "if some TV or radio comes along." They also appeared a couple of times in "Sunday Break" (ABC) but I get the impression that was filmed in a small studio. Another contact feels that TYLS is still a possibility, especially because in the photo no amps are visible -- signifying miming to a record.

I know that the JB7 appeared on an existing Sunday Night At The Palladium but it doesn't look like a SNALP set though?

I've seen that episode and it's a very plain set and one of the JB7 was absent through illness. It's quite sad, really, that most of their TV work is missing or wiped. Appearances on Six-Five Special, Oh Boy!, Music Shop, Drumbeat, The Jack Jackson Show, TYLS, The Melody Dances -- all gone.

It's not in any of the TYLS books that came out in the 60's. I've looked through getty images for you but no sign of the John Barry 7 from TYLS. I'd say it's probably not TYLS although they did have some interesting sets so it is possible. Good luck with the book!
