Dear Friends,
The great drama producer David Rose has died aged 92.
David was the original producer of Z Cars and Softly Softly. In 1971, David Attenborough appointed him head of English Regions drama in Birmingham at Pebble Mill. He was responsible for all the regional drama that the BBC produced for many years and nurtured the careers of Peter Terson, Mike Leigh, Willy Russell, Alan Bleasdale and David Hare. One of his producers, Barry Hanson also directed 'Thirty Minute Theatre' and 'Second City Firsts' in Birmingham and after a stint outside the BBC (producing features such as 'The Long Good Friday') he returned as head of drama to BBC Birmingham in the early 1990's. This is a fabulous legacy, a producer of genuine talent developing genuine talent and producing work anyone would be proud of. I am very fortunate to have worked in English Regions drama under Barry Hanson and to have met David Rose. Both great talents and it's fabulous that we're seeing a resurgence of drama from the Midlands and producers such as Steven Knight prepared to give a voice to Birmingham drama talent.
Paul
