Good article in the latest Doctor Who Magazine on Fury from the Deep, with the mention (first I've ever heard of it) of the original film inserts for the helicopter chase sequence apparently being in the possession of Hugh David.
Although this was known about by the author of the article in 1986, was anything ever done to follow it up? Was it ever mentioned to actress Wendy Williams?

It's been followed up frequently with Wendy. The footage was never found.
It was actually first mentioned in Patrick's original DWM interview about 30 years ago.

Shame it was never found then, as the sequence would have looked stunning had it been transferred using modern telecine methods from the original film negative. Would it have been shot on 35mm or 16?

It would have been 16mm. 35mm location work was phased out during the production of Season Five and by the time of Fury, it had been abandoned entirely.
A 35mm camera would have been far too bulky to achieve the handheld shots needed that had to be taken on board the helicopter.
