Using Handbrake For DVD Ripping

I've installed Handbrake so I can rip from DVD-Rs, but when I try ripping just a single title it's telling me it's going to take hours & hours to do this, even when I've left things running for a few hours, expecting it to settle down to a reasonable time.

Does anyone have any suggestions, I was expecting things to be a lot quicker.

DVDVideoSoft works well for me for most of my collection - and I use Handbrake to rip things from the many unfinalised discs I've come across. 100% success rate, so far...
