Yes indeed. The first two episodes took place before the film opening credits! They did do radio of all three of those first films and all were faithful and a good compliment to the originals
Now the question would be, with Disney re-writing the Star Wars Universe Bible, how much of the 'extra' bits the radio serials had are canon?

Made for National Public Radio in the States - SW and ESB in the early '80s, ROTJ in the mid-90s. All still exist and have been released countless times Having just read the Wiki link, I didn't know it was a co-production with the BBC.
