Nice. www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-04-19/unseen-colour-footage-of-david-attenboroughs-zoo-quest-series-unearthed-from-bbc-archive To the amazement of everyone – including Attenborough himself – the film was found to have been originally shot in colour, even though with television still very much a monochrome medium it was broadcast in black and white. Barton says the canisters of film, simply marked “Attenborough”, were discovered last autumn in the library of the BBC’s Natural History Unit in Bristol. “I have been here 30 years and I didn’t know about them,” he says. “The most experienced archive researcher who’s also been here 30 years didn’t know about them. They was uncatalogued and unlabelled. I find it unbelievable myself. I was totally amazed.” Thanks to Paul Hayes for this info.

Blimey. The three critics on Sky's newspaper review at 11:30 had all three of them bewail the intention of 'colourising' this material "are they going to colour it by hand, frame by frame?" and stating positively that people used to hi-def colour will find this absurd.Mind you, they were going on a teaser piece on a cover which said that the show "Will have its first outing in colour".Emphasis on "in colour",of course.
Zoo Quest in Colour will be shown on BBC4 on Wednesday, May 11.

Excellent news!
The article says that footage was found for the first three exhibitions - "When the news reached London, a further search revealed more of the original colour rushes – all from the first three expeditions Attenborough undertook for Zoo Quest in 1954, 1955 and 1956 – making six hours of unseen material in total."
Lost Shows suggests that Series 1 is missing (in some form) - lostshows.com/default.aspx?programme=c90744c0-cd45-4ad3-881f-a17e973012c4
Does that mean that some (if not a full episode) of this material has potentially been recovered as well?

Hmmm. Attenborough said: “I was astonished when someone said we’ve got nearly all the film of the first three expeditions you did in colour. I said it’s impossible, we shot in black and white.”
Cameraman Charles Lagus said: “At its best it’s as good as any colour you see now … quite staggering for the period that it was filmed in. I was astonished.”

I've always thought there was stuff still out there uncatalogued somewhere,it doesn't fill you with much confidence when experienced archive researchers are missing things, let some of the forum members into some of these establishments to have a good look around that's what i say. It's good to see these have been found though.

The BBC are keen on this: broadcast quality (can a DVD be far off?),and it's David Attenborough!

Not sure that I agree with the first comment there: This makes a change from hearing about brainless BBC ites burning, shredding or losing heritage items of historical value, given that they didn't know they had it for more than 60 years! Still,I don't suppose that one could say it was actually lost...Funnily enough,no-one seems to be making much of the fact that series 1 was entirely lost. The Mail says that the Special will the showcase the best of Zoo Quest To West Africa, Zoo Quest To Guiana and Zoo Quest For A Dragon in HD colour.

Zoo Quest in Colour will be shown on BBC4 on Wednesday, May 11. Nice to know it's being broadcast. So often I hear of something being found only for it to be assimilated by the Borgthrown into the BBC archive and never seen again.

Well...some of it's going to be in the programme.I'd love to know just how much there is,of what was broadcast.

Thanks,Ian.Interesting.From memory, only the transition shots from b&w to colour are the same. The other one had the archivist in the studio, and gave someone the chance to say "Discovered in this very building!".

The Points West Facebook video is very interesting. The piece of music accompanying the mantis at the very end of the piece seems familiar, too
