Europe: Them or Us - 1. An Island Apart BBC 2 12th April 2016 Presented by Nick Robinson... No missing footage as far as I know?... but I just wanted to congratulate the BBC for a most enjoyable programme (in my opinion) I've already made my mind up which way I'm going to vote in the Britain In or Out of Europe referendum; but for any forum member still undecided this was a very informative 59 mins with lots of original footage from the 40's...50's...60's and 70's. Here's the link for the programme... www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b077nrb1/europe-them-or-us-1-an-island-apartpart 2 is next week.

The minute I see anyone talking about leaving or not leaving 'Europe' I get quite fed up.It's like a religious adherent calling someone 'less spiritual' because they aren't signed up to a particular religion. Apparently, the EU and the Hotel California have this in common: you can sign-in,but you can never leave!
In terms of Britain's 'insularity',I'd suggest that once again, compared to,say,Japan (Between 1639 and 1858 the country was largely isolated from the outside world. Trade was prohibited except for two Dutch ships a year at Nagasaki.Japan nowadays has a no-immigration policy) Britain remains welcoming to foreign ideas and foreigners.
p.s.William,I was thinking of the title of the programme, but since you do it too, remember that the Scottish referendum was never about whether Scotland should leave the British Isles!

Hi John,
I'm sure a lot of the British population get 'fed up' with all the speculation on the outcome of the EU referendum. I personally like watching and listening to all the current affairs discussions on TV and Radio.
Thanks for the information on Japan (very interesting)
Finally, could you elaborate on what you mean regarding the Scottish referendum?

I had heard that Japan was thinking of making it easier to emigrate thanks to the ageing population & low birth rate.
From friends I know who have worked there it's not super difficult to work in Japan for a few years at a time, though getting a permanent visa is difficult.
It's mostly people of Japanese origin from places like Brazil who have been able to jump through all the hoops.

I was thinking about the term "leaving Europe" and the way it sounds as though a country was about to shoot into space. The Scots were voting about leaving a political union so/and yet no-one said "Will Scotland leave the Northern Hemisphere?". I like the Dylan line about: Every empire must fall, Even the third Reich. The British empire's gone. It's possible to realise that one day there will be no EU,just as one day it hadn't yet been formed.I hated the idea of Scotland leaving, but it's quite likely to happen soon.Belgium's been around since the early 1800s,the nation of Germany dates from 1870,Italy was unified in 1861...Things change. To a child,it seems as though he'll always live at home in his parents' house.Often, this isn't so. This is a bit out of date, but puts Japan into perspective: www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2014/06/18/voices/japans-immigration-principle-looking-solid-ever/#.Vw_7WtQrLIV

Great post John It's amazing to think the German nation has only existed since 1870 and Italy since 1861. What song are the Dylan lyrics from please? Regarding Scotland leaving the UK? to quote L/CPL Jones (Don't Panic)

Thanks for the song title and YouTube link.
It's a good song, I did'nt know that the couple were found guilty of spying for the Russians and handing over A-Bomb secrets. For which they were executed in 1953.
What right have the Guardian or any other newspaper to say that just because a very large (majority?) of the British public want to leave the EU that they are "Anti-Europe"
By the same token you could turn that argument on it's head and say groups wanting to remain in the EU are "Anti-British"
It is a very childish attitude from The Guardian.

Almost as childish as some of the views the other way, which are usual right wing tabloid stuff parroted by the loud mouth down the pub stuff.

Why can't we live in a world whereby people can feel safe to debate their opposing political views without losing their temper? that's what's wrong, there are always going to be people that think differently from yourself (why are we always so serious about politics.) let's have some humour for a change! Peace Man! anyone for a drink?

Peace Man! anyone for a drink? We got called racists for raising concerns albeit in a public place that some Greggs are refusing to sell sausage rolls due to Halal restrictions. How come discussing things religious are deemed to be racist? Race is the country or tribe you are born into. Religion is a conscious choice. Hard to be humorous when our freedom of speech is so curtailed. WTF?

Funny it works some times, like when Subway started to use halal meat there were calls for a boycott.
Most of these tend to be tabloid rumours that are just parroted by people without any mental ability to think for themselves, so deserve all the contempt the get in my opinion.
