Did anyone ever watch the ITV series "Good Afternoon" in the mid-1970s? It was hosted mainly (as I recall) by Mavis Nicholson.
The reason I ask is that Peter Gabriel was featured on it sometime between January and May 1976. As this was before I - and probably 99% of the UK population - could even dream of owning a video recorder, the only way to catch a television show was to watch it in real time. This was not easy when a programme was shown on a weekday afternoon and I was in my first year of 9 to 5 employment. My best mate and I had heard or read somewhere that Gabriel was going to be a guest (this was some months after he'd left Genesis), so we both made an excuse (probably telling our respective bosses that we had a dental appointment or something similar) and we bunked off and watched it at his house. Apart from being a fine interviewee, Gabriel also sang a live version of "Here Comes The Flood", accompanying himself on piano, and this was long before the track appeared on his debut solo album. My mate recorded the whole thing onto audio cassette by way of a hand-held microphone in front of the TV set speaker but sadly the tape has long gone AWOL.
I've tried to find details or clips of this on t' interweb, but haven't had any joy. Nothing. I can't even pinpoint the date more accurately, as my trusty diaries have a gap between the beginning of Jan and the end of May 1976 (which is incredibly frustrating as I would have made a mention of it at the time). So... any clues, info or memories of this out there? Wonder if it still exists?

I vividly remember seeing this, and being absolutely gobsmacked as I had no idea PG was scheduled to appear. I was still at school at the time which could place the show at half term or the Easter holidays. Not sure that helps much! At some time since then I think I’ve seen a clip, so hopefully it still exists, but not 100% sure of this.

According to wikipedia her first presenting job was on the 1972 show 'Good Afternoon', after which her TV career spanned the next 25 but you probably already know this Kev. Although o/t there is a clip on youtube of Mavis interviewing David Bowie on afternoon plus from 1979. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwTFW4kfHl4

Afternoon Plus was made by Thames and so now owned by Fremantle - and don't forget it became Afternoon Plus 4 when it moved to C4. Ask Fremantle Archive - they may well have it!

Now, the archive for that show is a bit incomplete, so it it 50/50 as to whether they have it, but, the Summer of 1976 seems to be a definite probability for the date of it!

Hi Kev - I’ve long been researching this subject as I missed the show in question and found out about it later the same afternoon from my brother who watched it - he was off work and I was on school Easter holidays. Just last week I found a reference to it in Record Mirror stating it was to be shown on 22 April 1976. It would be great if your mates tape ever turned up (or one from someone else). I have about 10 mins of audio that I got from a Genesis collector a long time ago. The interview segment I have had him talking about the various costumes while a live (at Wembley) version of The Waiting Room plays in the background but sadly the version of Here Comes the Flood is not in the tape. My brother says Gabriel appeared with coloured hair (green or multicoloured perhaps?) Be good if you have any further recollection of it. Mic

Mic hi Mic, yes that date would definitely stack up, it was certainly a midweek slot. I have asked my mate a couple of times when in contact with him and he usually says he'll look it out but nothing has ever come back so I doubt whether he still has it unfortunately. Does your tape have Mavis Nicholson's voice on it as well or just Peter's? It was a face-to-face studio interview, and it was at the end - or certainly near it - that he played "Here Comes The Flood" and we listened to the tape a number of times so that when his first solo album came out it was the only track we were familiar with and we preferred it to the LP version as it was so basic. My mate's TV wasn't a colour set so I couldn't say what colour his hair was! What I can recall is that Peter was quite dismissive of Eurovision type pop songs as having formulaic choruses which went along the lines of "Boom-u-tattle-tattle-ping-pong" - it's funny what sticks in one's mind isn't it?

Hi Kev I Read Your Post A Few Weeks Back And Searched Out An Old Cassette I Had Of The Said Event - Please Don't Don't Get Excited, Only A Fragment Is Left And What Is Left Is Damaged ! I Uploaded It To The Genesis Movement As A Torrent, But Since Then Someone Has Put It On youTube And Someone Else Has Put It On "Denoised" Such Is The Nature Of The "Flood" Anyhow I Have Included Links And The Original Notes I Put With My Uploads.. All The Best Tim Ps: I Apologise In Advance For The Background Racket !! A Fragment Of Peter Gabriel Being Interviewed On ITV's Good Afternoon With Mavis Nicholson I Believe It Was On The 22nd Of April 1976 In An Attempt To Try And Find Something Unique I Could Share With Everyone, I Have Dug Up This Old Tape I Recorded In Front Of A Crappy Old Black And White Telly In My Bedroom, In Yorkshire, Back In The Mists Of Time. Please Don't Get Too Excited About This, It Could Have Been An Awful Lot Better.. The Majority Of The Interview Has Been Taped Over, So All We Have Left Is About Eight Minutes, The Good News Is That "Here Comes The Flood" Is Contained In Those Minutes, The Bad News Is That Around 42 Seconds Of The Song Have To Compete With A Large Amount Of Unwanted Noise ! The Noise Is From An Extremely Large Billboard Poster Unpeeling Itself Off The Wall And Onto Me, My Mate, The Television I Was Taping From And Probably The Rather Basic Taping Equipment As Well - I Was A Bit Pissed Off As You Can Probably Imagine. I Have Cut Off A Bit Of My Petulant Annoyance That Was On The End Of This Recording, As After A Few Listens, My 15 Year Old Self Was Severely Getting On My Nerves. I Hope Someone Will Be Able To Do Something To Improve The Song As It Is A Great Performance From Peter, I Just Put The Knackered Old Tape In An Old Music System And Linked It To My Computer Using A Copy Of Cool Edit - No Filters, Noise Reduction Or Anything, As I Don't Really Know Enough About It To Do It Proper Justice. Here's Hoping You Find It Worth Listening To All The Best Tim
