Hi Alan, It is intriguing that the synopsis about TURNABOUT mentions "From Canada"... at the moment, I am trying to confirm more information on where it originated from? The article below (from the TV Times in June 1957) mentions that "People's Champion" Pamela Russell had Radio experience in Canada! ...so maybe that's a clue? was this TV series originally a Canadian RADIO show? or maybe that's a red herring? anyway, if any forum member can solve this query for Alan please post the answer. (thanks)

Hi Alan, It is intriguing that the synopsis about TURNABOUT mentions "From Canada"... at the moment, I am trying to confirm more information on where it originated from? The series was originally devised in Canada by Roy Ward Dickson, who then took it to the UK. The UK series was made by Rediffusion. It was a bizarre format where contestants participated in parlour games to win the right to challenge Dickson to a spelling contest. It sounds like an interesting curiosity which would be worth watching if an episode survived.

Thanks for that information Ken, it does sound a bizarre concept for a quiz show? anyway, here is more about Roy Ward Dickson... www.roywarddickson.com/tv.htmlseems like we've got Roy Ward Dickson to thank for the dreaded Mr & Mrs concept!!! Jeez. That show should have been dead and buried years ago! (but no) hey guy's let's bring it back! Just goes to show that not everything from the past is good.

Number 78 on the 1957 list...
15/08/57 is the only date I have a TV Times listing for...the other information is from "Lost Shows"...
Summers Here(Comedy Show)
18.07.57 with Jill Summers, Michael Bentine, Wilfred Hyde White, Sheldon Allman, Erik Chitty, Pamela Ann Davey, Dick Vosburgh
15.08.57 (8:30pm to 9:15pm) with Jill Summers, Michael Bentine, Adele Leigh, Nicholas Parsons, Pip Hinton, The Confrey Phillips Trio, The Malcolm Clare Dance Group, The Barney Gilbraith Singers, The Steve Race Orchestra Script by: Bernard Alder and Ross Parker,Settings designed by:Bernard Carey, Devised and Directed by:Douglas Hurn
29.08.57 with Jill Summers, Michael Bentine, Pip Hinton, The Confrey Phillips Trio, The Malcolm Clare Dancers, The Steve Race Orchestra
26.09.57 Summer's Ending with Jill Summers, Michael Bentine, Michael Gough, Harry Fowler and Terence Alexander.
it has 2 meanings, one is the obvious one, Summer the season, with one episode per June, July, August and Summer's Ending...September, the other meaning is even cooler, it refers to Jill Summers in that (Jill) Summer's Here..so the show was actually her show, or she was the main star..now we becomes clear why she is listed first above everyone else...
also, Jill Summer got top billing over Bentine, she was a comedienne, who was also an actress who later played battleaxe Phyllis Pearce between 1972-1996 in Coronation Street according to imdb, also in many other series.. she died in 1997 at the age of 86, which means that in Summer's Here in 1957 she was 46!

Number 80 on the 1957 list...
Jolly Good Time/Dead Giveaway
6 part play
Written by: Peter Ling from an idea by Jonathan Alwyn Designed by:Sylva Nadolny Directed by:Daphne Shadwell
Cast Larry Haines.........Donald Hewlett (episodes 1,2,3,5,6) Jane Kimball.........Christine Pollon (episodes 1,2,3,5,6) Alexander Kimball....Michael Walker (episodes 1,2,3,5,6) Arthur Maffin........Otto Diamant (episode 1) Billy Archer.........Jeffrey Segal (episodes 1,3,5,6) Dept.Insp.Forbes.....Robert Cartland (episodes 1,2,3,5,6) Paul Anderson........Philip Ashley (episodes 5,6) Mrs Bowling..........Ruth Kettlewell (episodes 2,3,4) Police Sergeant......Patrick Connor (episode 5) maybe a character named Mafalda? see (episode 6)
07.08.57 The Rules Of The Game (When Larry Haines introduces the popular giveaway quiz show "Good Fortune" it is usually the contestants who get the surprises. But in this particular programme goes fatally wrong and that is a shock for everybody - including Scotland Yard.)
14.08.57 The First Of The Questions (Maffin entered the soundproof box,but he never lived to answer the £1,000 question. He was murdered. So now the real jackpot question is - who killed him?)
21.08.57 The Middle Of The Night (When Arthur Maffin was murdered during the TV quiz show "Good Fortune" suspicion fell at first on quizmaster Larry Haines. To clear himself, Larry breaks into Arthur's house looking for clues. But when Inspector Forbes goes in soon afterwards he finds Larry lying unconscious on the floor.)
28.08.57 The Hole In The Wall had the usual cast as in previous 3 episodes apart from the Arthur Maffin in episode one, and also in this episode was Mrs Bowling, (Ruth Kettlewell,) there may have been others in this Episode 4, but I do not know for sure?
04.09.57 The Facts Of The Matter (One contestant has already been murdered. Quizmaster Larry Haines suspected the dead man's housekeeper, Mrs Bowling. Unfortunately someone else stepped in first...now Mrs Bowling has been murdered.
11.09.57 The End Of The Trail (Which of the quiz show team had known Mafalda before the war under another name? Alexander finds and old photograph of Mafalda and Paul Anderson together, when suddenly Anderson walks in.)
..the Jolly Good Time was a banner/header for shows/series/programmes that were presented by Jimmy Hanley from September 1956, to at least April 1958, it showed all manner of shows..
Donald Hewlett who is probably best remembered for later playing the Colonel in It Ain't Half Hot Mum.. married the next named person Christine Pollon, in 1947, however, by 1956 he had married a second time, as per imdb for Donald Hewlett, but he obviously kept on good terms with Christine Pollon, as they starred together in Dead Giveaway in 1957.
