(I know it's off topic, but I know I'll get a sensible answer here !)
Is it me or ITV 4 using different prints to what we saw in the 80's
I could've sworn the Central repeats were mostly teaser then titles/rest of story, but ITV 4 are, so far, titles then teaser/rest of story.
What was the original format of the show opening back in the 70's?

The teaser is mainly a North American thang IIRC . simply because of their advert system . IE commercials--teaser--commercials--titles-- commercials -- program etc
The UK format was originally ... century 21 - titles- intro to episode freeze, fade- then programme with two advert breaks.
Another possible way of telling a old N American print is that it will have 'peculiar' fade outs . For example someone might be talking and it then fades out. BUT instead of fading up to a different scene as you expect to happen, it will fade up to the same face and same position of the fade out , which was obviously a nifty way of inserting more adverts?
Watch some old Star Treks and you will see these fade outs happen ... but not on the BBC prints as they chopped out any unnecessary fades from day 1 , all you have is a stunted swell of the music.

I didn't catch the start last night (coming in from a New Year party) but the print looked rather pale (faded?) and dusty so may be a returned export print. Certainly nothing like the DVD restored versions.

The BBC made new prints for their screening, I believe from 16mm IIRC. These would be the prints used for DVD.
The 80s episodes shown on "Late Night Late" (well, down here they were anyway!) were shown in the original format, minus the Century 21 screen. This is a format used on a lot of Gerry's shows - start the episode with an intro (NOT a teaser, but a prologue, e.g. UFO crashes, we see alien in the bushes, freeze) and the UFO logo came over that freeze frame. We then get the titles, and the rest of the episode follows. So basically, the only difference was the missing Century 21 logo.
