Herbie was a lovely, lovely guy. I worked with him on a documentary I made for the DVD release of 'I, Claudius' for BBC Worldwide. I shot a pretty detailed interview with him, but when he arrived at TVC for the recording, he asked that first could he just talk and get his memories out. So he sat and spoke for a good twenty minutes, unprompted, just offering his memories of making the series.
I later visited him at his home in North London to collect some photographs from his personal archive. He had many stills not in the BBC photo library and we used them all in the doc. He then tried to get me to join the Directors' Guild, offering to sponsor me. He had some fascinating stories to tell, off the record of course, about the making of 'I, Claudius', but he did tell me a fascinating tale about another of his productions, 'The Siege of Manchester'. Not long after the first transmission of the play, he had a call at the BBC from Stanley Kubrick's office at Shepperton, where Kubrick was working on '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Kubrick's assistant asked if Herbie could go to Shepperton and bring with him a copy of 'The Siege of Manchester' that could be projected. Herbie took along the 35mm master and was ushered into the screening room where Kubrick was waiting. Before any words could be exchanged, the lights went down and the film started. After the credits rolled and the lights came up, Kubrick turned to Herbie and asked how he had managed to get the performances he had from the actors.
Herbie didn't elaborate to me on his response to the great director, but he and Kubrick became firm friends.
Herbie; a remarkable director and a great man.

Rediffusion The Gamblers 25/7/68 The Day the Banana Threw a Gorilla at Rachel. TV Times article... With a Welsh husband you might think the accent would come easily to the trained ear of an actress. Whether it did or not, however, Gwen Watford has always been reluctant to accept a Welsh part. Happily, her misgivings were over-ruled when she read the script of Ewart Alexander's play The Day the Banana Threw a Gorilla at Rachel. Incidentally, for those who like their i's dotted and their t's crossed, that off-beat title is explained in the play. In a small village school, tucked away in the Black Mountain's of Wales, a feud has been waged for the last 29 years between school teachers Rachel Grant (Gwen Watford) and Harry Jarman (Alfred Burke). For three generations of children through this school this sad battle has involved the pupils as well as themselves. Now,with the pupils reduced to only six,the school is finally closing down. Before children and teachers leave, however, there is this last day...a day of revelation,as well as final reprisals.

Simon has heard back from ITV that they hold the following... "There are some film elements for Retreat, but none are confirmed as being the whole, complete play. The database entry does suggest it's in colour but I don't have access to any information about overseas sales".Simon has made a submission to Lostshows.com for "Retreat"

A find, as such. Not sure if it'll be in colour though; it would have only been shot incolour if it was for export - that is probably an ITN Source default setting.
