The Onedin Line - Wind Blows Free

Hi folks

I have joined to ask a question, which I hope some of you might be able to help me with. Browsing through Kaleidoscope's webpages I noted that, amongst the Library of Congress findings from a few years ago, the pilot episode of The Onedin Line (The Wind Blows Free) was recovered. This was broadcast in December 1970 and featured a different actress in the part of Anne Onedin. However, elsewhere I read on the net that what was recovered was actually a copy of the existing reshoot of The Wind Blows Free for series one, with Anne Stallybrass in the role of Anne.

Can anyone here let me know if the original pilot was recovered and, if so, in what format?

Lostshows isn't 100% accurate. A LOT of data, a few volunteers... Maybe it wasn't updated.

No, the report of its recovery was inaccurate and it is still missing.

I checked with Kaleidoscope a couple of years ago after I visited Anthony Coburn's widow and daughter.

These programmes were broadcast on PBS (USA) in 1977 with one "The Running Tide" video playing after each "The Onedin Line" episode.

They were filler prgrammes to take the place of advertisement breaks that the BBC had prepared for, but which were not utilised on PBS.

"The Running Tide" programmes were not transmitted during the UK, Australian or New Zealand showings of "The Onedin Line."

Two hours of TOL+TRT were broadcast on the same night and I recorded them all on a colour VTR.

There was no time to rewind the 1 hour 7" reel of videotape, I just removed the first take-up reel, and put on an empty reel and threaded a new full reel to get the second hour.

PBS (USA) broadcast only seasons 1 & 2 of TOL.

The subjects of TRT were approximately matched to themes of TOL during season 1 but I guess TRT had already been produced independently. During season 2 TOL they repeated one of the 15 TRT videos that were already broadcast following a season 1 TOL.

The 15 TRT episodes I recorded are the only ones I know. I made up the filenames since they show no titles.

A search has located a VHS copy of several episodes in a Philadelphia museum library

Here's why the video quality is so low.

It was an antenna broadcast in 1977, to my trick TV with composite video & audio output, to a Panasonic 3160 VTR. Then in the early 1980's I copied the recordings to VHS cassettes in 6 hour mode.

The age of the VHS tapes is about 30 years and the age of the VCR's about 20 years.

The VCR output signal today is often glitchy enough to shut down my 640x480 AD, and even the 320x240 AD can't compensate for frames that are defective.

There was no usable video in the output of TRT 15 so I only saved the soundtrack as .MP3.

Conceivably the 4 VHS cassettes that include TRT videos could be professionally cleaned and transferred to DVD (that costs $40 per cassette) and that would recover TRT with better video.

I don't plan on doing an Onedin Line website. If you want these videos on your Onedin etc website please take copies. I expect I will not delete these from my public Skydrive

On the subject of the Onedin Line - apologies if there is a more appropriate general thread for this than about the pilot - I just picked up, by chance, a tin of location footage from a 1979 episode. As I'm a bit broke at the moment, I'd be keen to sell it on if anyone is passionate about it and fancies it?

Otherwise happy to have some film in my possession as for all my passion for archive TV, I've never actually owned any film. Any thoughts on it? Would be nice to work out which episode it's from. It just says Onedin 1979 Stunt Man. Geraint Morris producer, Sheila S Tomlinson editor. Two reels inside. Nothing to play it on.

Tempted to admit I'm dreaming it contains misfiled 60s Who footage or colour Pertwee location footage but obviously that would be silly...
