How very true, great article. . Had I known about Mr Edgoose he would have been an inspiration to my younger self. Back in the day, when I got hold of my first working 405 set as a kid in 1973, admittedly a high gain GEC model, on just a band 3 dipole aerial in my bedroom in East Lincs I could pull in a good picture of Yorkshire TV from Emley Moor and Anglia from Belmont. On high pressure summer days I could get weak band 3 signals from all over. Ah, how I miss the days of VHF anologue transmission. UHF was never much good for pulling in distant signals apart from a couple of occasions in freak weather conditions with good skip when I could get PTT from Holland and ZDF from Germany, picture only in both cases as the sound signal was transmitted on a different frequency.

I remember trying UHF from the Netherlands when I lived in East Yorkshire. We were so close to the coast and it was so flat sometimes foreign signals were so strong it took UK TV offline and I used to disconnect the aerial to be able just to watch the BBC! There was a fairly big hobbyist scene watching foreign TV with large aerials - TVDX as it was called. Of course, you just use FilmOn these days. The internet takes the fun out of everything (or puts it back, depending on your point of view I suppose)
