Just looking at the credits of Magpie in TV Ark, I was reminded of a question which has been at the back of my mind for years - namely, when did the song stop at "Seven for a Secret Never to be Told"? Am I dreaming, therefore, of "Eight's a Wish and Nine's a Kiss, Ten is a Bird you must not miss..."??
Erm, sorry....must get out more.

Yes, you really must get out more... but then again, so should I! "Eight's a wish, Nine's a kiss, Ten is a bird you must not miss."

I'm not sure, but I guess that the "8's a wish & 9's a kiss, 10 is a bird you must not miss" bit was only on the full version of the theme, by the Murgatroyd Band (actually the Spencer Davies Group), available via many a 2nd-hand record shop on the Decca "The World of TV Themes" LP, and more recently an RPM cd called "Magpie". I think that they did badges based on the lyric, though how you won 'em I dunno. What are the real words to the bit in the full song that sound like "I would like to eat to win..."?. It sounds like some sort of obesity challenge, but I'm sure I've misheard. Oh, and the theme goes: "One for Sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl and Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold, Seven for a secret never to be told..M-aa-aa-g-pieee...Eight's a kiss and Nine's a wish, Ten is a bird you must not miss...." And then it goes into the "I would like to eat to win" bit that I'm unsure about. 10 forgives all kinds of sin, from 10 begin again! I think it might originate from an old folk rhyme.

The full lyric of the theme was definitely heard on the show's title sequence as I used to hear it there. Maybe later on they faded it early and it got missed out? I know they changed the graphics later on (when they went colour?). But at least at first you got to hear all of the verse.

No, I'm sure at some point the title sequence did cut short the lyric after 7, rather than it being just a fade. I was speaking to my mate in the pub about and he reckons it was to squeeze another advert in. My drunken theory was that the 9's a kiss badge might prove tricky to award....

"Eight's a wish, Nine's a kiss, Ten is a bird you must not miss." is definately right, that's why I quoted it...
I have the following Magpie episode, from 1972:
Mick Robertson's first day (Friday). This edition features articles on: Terry Cooper's (the Leeds and England footballer) training/coaching shoes, which he designed especially for football training, whilst in hospital with a broken leg; portable colour (TV) cameras and competition ploughing matches at Windsor Great Park. The other presenters on the show are: Tony Bastable, Susan Stranks, Douglas Rae. And, just in case you were wondering... "Eight's a wish, Nine's a kiss, Ten is a bird you must not miss."
I'll run it through later (both beginning and end credits), to check for sure...

Just found this: THE ORIGINAL MAGPIE THEME! The classic full 2:30 theme as performed by the Spencer Davis Group, with added psychedelic Hammond organ and meltdown middle eights. In a word, rock! tv.cream.org/specialassignments/themes/magpie.mp3So, that should clear things up...!

Ted,
The question wasn't about the lyrics but when and why 8,9 and 10, which were in the title song when Magpie started in the sixties, had been excised so that the song ended at 7 by the time of the early seventies.
So, riddle still not yet solved!
