Here's some more information about “Scene at 6.30” from various websites and publications (including TV Pop Diaries and ‘Channelling The Beat! by Peter Checksfield).
More missing appearances from Scene at 6.30
c.1963: The Merseybeats 28 Jan 1963: Brian Hyland 30 Jan 1963: The Vernons Girls 31 Jan 1963: Joe Brown 01 Feb 1963: Kenny Lynch 07 Jun 1963: Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen 24 Jun 1963: Johnny Cymbal (he probably performed “Mr Bass Man”) 15 Jul 1963 Gerry and the Pacemakers 26 Jul 1963: The Caravelles 30 Aug 1963: Little Peggy March 02 Sep 1963: Craig Douglas 1964: Tony Meehan – “Song of Mexico” c.1964: The Liverbirds (I think this all-female Liverpool group performed an instrumental, as they hadn’t yet acquired a vocalist) 04 Feb 1964: Frankie Davidson (Australian novelty pop singer) 06 Feb 1964: Mark Murphy 11 Feb 1964: Cleo Laine 20 Jun 1963: Eden Kane 26 Jun 1964: Chris Barber 21 Aug 1964: Tommy Tucker 22 Oct 1964: The Shangri-Las – “Remember (Walkin’ In The Sand)” (this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I didn’t have the exact date then) 09 Nov 1964: Herman’s Hermits 10 Nov 1964: Dave Berry 02 Dec 1964: Smokey Robinson and The Miracles 12 Dec 1964: Kenny Lynch Early 1965: The Excelles (Liverpool vocal group) c.1965: The Koobas 22 Jan 1965: Paul Anka – “To Wait For Love” 18 Aug 1965: St Louis Union 25 Aug 1965: The Hollies 19 Oct 1965: The Hollies 19 Nov 1965: The Fourmost 24 Nov 1965: The Hollies 17 Dec 1965: Major Lance 1966: Friday Brown appeared several times on the programme
More missing appearances from “Scene” (late-night programme)
06 July 1966: Dusty Springfield 27 Jul 1966: Manfred Mann - “Just Like a Woman”
28 Sep 1966: The Small Faces appeared in a half-hour “Scene” special produced by Johnny Hamp and Rod Taylor. The band appeared in front of an invited audience of 250 members of their fan club. The songs performed were Understanding / One Night Stand / Sha-La-La-La-Lee/ You’d Better Believe / Ooh Pah Pah Pah Doo/ You Need Love / All Or Nothing and possibly a cover version of Little Richard’s Bama Lama Bama Loo.
The special was recorded on 10 August 1966. According to Paolo Hewitt in his Steve Marriott biography, it was never transmitted. However, another source states that it was broadcast on 12 August 1966. I spotted a reference to the special in a small article about upcoming programmes in “The Stage” (08 September 1966). Therefore, I believe it was broadcast on 28 September 1966, the date given in Issue 5 of the Small Faces fanzine “Darlings of Wapping Wharf Laundrette”.
c.1967: Ethna Campbell (Irish singer) 1967: Adge Cutler and the Wurzels
Surviving clip
Sep 1967: Yoko Ono – “Music of the Mind”
This was a Performance Art piece, not a music performance, but this clip might still be of interest to some of you. Granada filmed Yoko Ono’s performance at the Bluecoat Chambers, Liverpool, on 26 September 1967, and the footage was probably broadcast on “Scene” the following night. The clip can be viewed on YouTube.
Other information
A short article in the Northern “TV Times” (9th-15th October 1965) claimed that 2 out of 3 musical guests on “Scene at 6.30” could be classed as folk singers. I suspect that quite a lot of folk-pop artists (such as Donovan, the Silkie etc.) appeared on the show around this time.
Any additional information or corrections are welcome.

Mike L Morton of Kaleidoscope is the man to contact. He knows Johnny Hamp so he may well remember.

Miming
Here’s a review of ‘Scene at 6.30’ from ‘The Liverpool Echo’ (13 July 1963). It was written by the TV critic ‘W.D.A.’
So established has the miming of pop records now become on ITV that in opposing the practice I feel like a lone voice crying in the wilderness. But just for the record, if you’ll pardon the pun, this practice was reduced to absurdity in ITV’s Scene at 6.30 last night, when a vocalist appeared miming to a disc on which the voice had been recorded in such a way as to make it sound like a chorus.

This thread contains many partial lists, so for ease of reference, I’ve decided to merge all the information into a single, chronological list. I’ve made a few corrections and I’ve also added lots of new details. This is a long list, so I’ll split it across more than one post for the sake of manageability.

There were a vast number of music performances on ‘Scene at 6.30’, so I’m almost certain that some missing footage will turn up one day. It’s possible that there might be clips hidden away in overseas archives. Earlier in this thread, I quoted a line from Johnnie Hamp’s ‘TV Times’ article from 1968, in which he recalled the early days of the programme:
Overnight the Mersey Sound became internationally famous. We sold thousands of feet of film of the new pop idols to TV stations around the world.
What was this footage and which countries bought it? I know that Granada sold their ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’: The Beatles In New York’ documentary and ‘The Music of Lennon and McCartney’ special to countries around the world. However, I haven’t been able to find any examples so far of ‘Scene’ footage of the Beatles or other pop groups being shown on foreign pop shows during the 1960s.
I know that an episode of ‘Scene at 6.30’ was included in a night of Granada programmes shown by a West German TV station on 9th October 1965 as part of a cultural exchange. Does this episode still exist in a German TV archive?
Also, a ‘Scene’ documentary about Twiggy was sold for broadcast to New York’s WPIX station in 1967. This programme still exists in the ITV archives, but it’s possible that WPIX may have purchased other ‘Scene’ specials too.

I’m still trying to find information about clips from ‘Scene at 6.30’ that were also shown outside the UK. So far, I’ve discovered that an entire episode was broadcast on 08 October 1966 on the 3rd TV Channel for Northern Germany and Berlin. I also know that a ‘Scene’ special about Twiggy (from 24 June 1967) was sold to WPIX in New York and to tv stations in Denmark and Australia in July 1967.
I haven’t been able to discover anything about the ‘Scene’ pop clips that were sold to TV stations around the world. It’s possible that a few of these might still exist as inserts within foreign pop shows or documentaries from the 1960s. How would we be able to identify them if they were to turn up on YouTube or elsewhere? Did the musical interludes on ‘Scene’ have a distinctive visual style?
I’ve not really been able to identify a unifying style because there are so few clips in existence. The music slot was handled by several directors (including Silvio Narrizano, Michael Apted, David Warwick and Phillip Casson) so there were bound to be variations in approach.
Many of the performances were recorded in Granada’s Studio 4, a tiny studio that also doubled as a continuity booth. It’s not much to go on, but I think a typical ‘Scene’ music performance would have been very tightly focused on the performers. There wouldn’t have been a studio audience or any space for elaborate set designs. The ‘Twist and Shout’ performance by the Beatles was very much in that style.
The Beatles performed against a ‘Daily Echo’ newspaper backdrop for ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ and ‘This Boy’. However, I doubt that backdrops were used that often. A large amount of publicity stills of pop stars were taken by Granada’s photographers Ray Green and Stewart Darby. From the few photos I’ve seen, it appears that ‘Scene’ performances often took place in a darkened studio lit only by spotlights.
‘Scene at 6.30’ also used location filming for many of the music performances. These were very popular at the time so perhaps some of these were sold abroad. They’ll be a lot easier to identify than the studio performances if any ever turn up.
Here’s a list of some of them:
28 Jan 1963: Frank Ifield - ‘The Wayward Wind’ – filmed on the moors near Manchester 30 Jan 1963: The Vernons Girls - ‘Do The Bird’ – filmed in a park c. Feb 1963: Shane Fenton - ‘I Ain’t Got Nobody’– set in a solitary confinement prison cell 5 Feb 1963: Johnny Kidd and the Pirates - on a boat sailing along the Manchester Ship Canal 8 Feb 1963: Little Eva - ‘The Locomotion’. She stood on the footplate of a ‘Scot’ locomotive in a railway depot in Longsight, Manchester 1963: Kenny Lynch - ‘Up on the Roof’. The performance took place on the roof of the Granada studios c. Nov 1963: The Country Gentlemen - ‘Greensleeves’ – filmed somewhere on the banks of the River Mersey c. Jul 1964: Ken Dodd – ‘Happiness’ – children were shown fishing in a river near Capesthorne Hall, Cheshire Jan 1965: The Righteous Brothers – ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling’ – filmed at Belle Vue Zoological Gardens, Manchester Jan 1965: The Just Four Men – also filmed at Belle Vue
It’s likely that some of these outdoor clips were filmed in a slightly surreal, jokey style common to pop promos from that era. It’s possible that dancers were featured alongside the musical performers occasionally.
Any further information is welcome.
