Hi, First post - be kind! My father has an audio tape of various snippets of off-air TV and radio news reports and programs related to the "Space Race," along with a The Sky at Night program. I believe the TSAN episode is the one transmitted April 2nd 1965, listed on lostshows.com as “Ancient Lore” (or as “Astronomy and Astrology” here: the-sky-at-night.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/april-2-1965-astronomy-and-astrology.html). Patrick discusses his views on astrology and presents images from the recent Ranger 9 mission. The TSAN episode seems to be complete with the exception of the opening and closing music, but is fairly good quality. The other stuff on the tape is a mixed bag. The tape is labelled Gemini 3. Some of it sounds to me like air-to-ground recordings, they have that "long wave" quality to them (distant music playing along side) and are difficult to follow in places. There are some short snippets of an ITN news report about Ranger 9 from 24/3/65. Amazingly I found the original script to it here: jiscmediahub.ac.uk/mediaContent/open/scripts/1965/19650324_LE_02_ITV.pdf (first two pages). I am guessing the TSAN episode may be worth putting back into the archives if no other audio recordings of it are already known about – what do you think? I am going to digitise the tape, would you guys recommend I put it on dropbox or similar? This will probably take me a couple of weeks to get around to as I'm in the middle of decorating, and also have to persuade my dad to retrieve the player from the loft! Darren

That sounds very very interesting! If the moderators want to be really really cautious they may object to posting it online. However, if the goal is to bring back a lost episode... personally I don't have a problem with that! Is the site you link to a transcription of the audio? the-sky-at-night.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/april-2-1965-astronomy-and-astrology.htmlIf he has any other tapes from those days...

I don't think that site is a straight transcription, but some of it is very close to Patrick's words on my tape, such as the line "The pattern of the constellation is nothing more than a line of sight effect..." It wouldn't surprise me if the webmaster of that site was working from a similar set of recordings.

Hi Darren,
Do keep us all posted on this. I'm certain that Paul Vanezis would welcome TSAT recording.

Hi Darren, Do keep us all posted on this. I'm certain that Paul Vanezis would welcome TSAT recording. I will do. Feel free to nag me if I haven't got around to it in a couple of weeks. I reckon one more weekend should sort the decorating out and then I can sort it!

I've got a wav file of the Sky at Night episode now. The old tape player did not cooperate at first (I think the belts need to get warmed up) but we got there in the end. There's a bit of hum on the recording but I don't know if that's from the archaic equipment or is present on the archaic tape (or the ears of the archaic operator.)
I guess if someone thinks this recording is worth saving properly then I could think about passing the tape on to someone with the right kit, but I don't want to simply hand it over to the first person who asks for it (unless they have the right credentials).
What's the consensus on me sharing a dropbox link to the recording here? I read the other recent topic about a recovered program disappearing into the BBC vaults, possibly never to be seen again, and it seems a big shame for something to be recovered without being appreciated. However I don't want to get banned on my first topic, or hassled by Auntie.
Also on the same tape are some clips from a couple of different Top of the Pops, probably from the episodes between 1/4/65 and 15/4/65. Mainly songs but unfortunately including a few links by Jimmy Saville.
Finally there's also a satire sketch show with David Frost and who we presume is John Bird doing a Harold Wilson impression. We think this is probably from 'Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life'. Only three episodes of this program are listed on lostshows.com so I presume it's not lost.
Haven't got around to recording the ITN bit yet. Is this likely to be of interest to anybody?

Is it possible that the David Frost might be from some election-night show?

I don't think it's from election night. There's another sketch on the tape, although I didn't recognise the performers, which if I remember right has applause after it. Also everything on the tape appears to be chronological, and this was after the TSAN recording from April 2nd (the election was 31/3/65).

Well done!!!
I doubt whether you would get into real trouble over a simple old audio tape. But maybe best not post it here, I have a feeling the moderators will understand you completely (as do I), but they want to keep this place 100% reputable.
I will mention this to the BBCers I know!

Hi Darren,
Is there any update on the reel-to-reel of TSAN? Is a recording heading back to the Beeb?
Best,
Ant - Wiped News
