He just rang in to Talk Sport radio. Sounded in good spirits and had some interesting stories to tell. He and his manager met with Ali and played him the record. The great man liked it, promoted it in interviews and it all took off from there.
Wakelin even sang live towards the end of the interview. Still in good vocal shape.
What is the status of his TOTP appearance? Safe, deleted, PVL??
The interview was right at the end of the Hawkesby and Jacobs show which can be streamed at Talk Sport's website. It was about 10m from the end of the show.

It was about 10m from the end of the show. Mark uk imdb says Johnny Wakelin made 3 appearances on TOTP, 22/7, 5/8/ and 19/8/76. Lostshows.com doesn't list any of these as Missing Episodes for TOTP. Was one of these 3 dates, the TOTP appearance you were asking about? |

I met Johnny Wakelin in the Miners Arms pub in Mytchett back in the 90's. Pleasant chap.
The PVL archive has a performance of Black Superman existing.

All the performances for 'In Zaire' exist and are indeed 'In Circulation' via the BBC4 & Einsfestival repeats.
The second of Johnny's two TOTPs for Black Superman was preserved in the PVL.
