THREAD STARTED BY JOHN STEWART - L.
Off topic as I assume from what I know series one of PLEASE SIR exists all on B+W V-T.
I recently saw the film version again and Peter Bayliss plays Dennis Dunstables Dad; as he did in the series around 1970 - 71.
However I have a memory of the first series. My Gran on Mums side was over and made a joke putting her false teeth in a bag of sweets and saying 'Ill have this one' when offered. I thought these were novelty candy teeth (like 'Sugar mice') and wanted one myself!.
PLEASE SIR was on; and I recall it was an episode where Mr Hedges goes back to see what Dennis' home life is like. His Dad threatened to throw a potty from the shed over him and I'm sure it was contraversial as you could almost see its simulated contents.
Now I'm sure Jack Woolgar played Dennis' Dad in this episode?
I later found a copy shelved of 'The Evening News' we had from Nov 1968 and there was a new series of 'PLEASE SIR' starting then which dates it more accurately.

Yes, the first series all exists and is available on Network DVD. Peter Bayliss played Dennis' dad all through the run. Jack Woolgar may have featured in an episode though (it's a while since I've watched it to remember for certain!).

on the subject of 'Please Sir !' which was such a great show for series 1 to 3 (plus the big screen version too) starring John Alderton & co... WHAT happened in season four... John Alderton quit the show after just two episodes, and despite initially bringing in Richard Warwick as the new teacher to replace him...however then after about three episodes featuring Warwick as lead teacher character they suddenly just 'sidelined' Warwick's character, instead featuring either the supporting cast or guest cast in far LESS funny episodes... then, in a terrible move, they brought in a really appalling Weavers Street mob of yobbish 'kids' (nothing like the great '5C' crowd) - a bunch who had NO charm or charisma at all (one was a complete moron who made even Frankie Abbott look intelligent !) Richard Warwick understandably quickly quit and they next got in a couple of completely undeveloped new teacher characters (Bernard Holley from 'Z Cars' was one, a decent actor doing nothing much !) and with ever more infantile scipts the show limped to a sad unfunny conclusion - never had the term 'School's out' seemed so apt !! a sad end to a once terrific and unusual set sitcom - the spinoff show 'The Fenn Street Gang' wasn't quite as good as the original 'Please Sir !' but was still better than the awful season four fiasco the parent show became ! anyone know why John Esmonde & Bob Larbey let their creation slip so badly - or why Richard Warwick's character (who had potential) was after three episodes suddenly 'sidelined' to cameo parts (no doubt forcing him to quit the show) The sad demise of 'Please Sir !' after John Alderton's exit has always puzzled me...

Patrick, are you 100% certain it wasn't Richard Wrwick's performance which caused his character to be sidelined? The new teacher was meant to ooze charisma in a more obvious way than Hedges did,but didn't.Oddly, the same thing happened when John Alderton was replaced in the second season of 'Upchat'.

whats happened to the bfi database to check tx dates? It got upgraded and doesn't work any more, for me at least. Going back to the original post,I was hoping it was about the series 1 (or 2?) scene which revolves around one of the cleaners losing her set of false teeth on screen. They come out early, causing giggles, but are they-yuk-real false teeth? We need to know!

I don't know what happened in season four - Richard Warwick wasn't that bad and had barely arrived when they sidelined him...only for the supporting cast to demonstrate that while they were excellent as supporting cast none were really of 'leading cast' suitability (no refelection on the actors of course - I refer to the characters who were 'supports')
Guest cast like Derek Griffiths (in 'Black Power') just came & went so no point in trying to carry the show with guests - while the next pair of regulars, two new teachers (Bernard Holley & Vivienne Martin, both good actors) were never developed in any way at all & seemed just there purely to make up the numbers
The Weavers Street mob (which they were) were a charmless bunch & a terrible idea
Above all the scripts rapidly went downhill.....
