I was fortunate enough to watch a copy of this episode earlier, but the quality was very poor - the episode is timecoded, blurry and somewhat bright/colourful. I've uploaded a few examples: Is this the highest quality copy in existance?

I have no idea what exists for this episode -- but that looks like a Nth generation domestic VHS recording, so I would suspect that there's probably a better copy around somewhere....
I haven't seen video that looks that bad since the 80s when we used to watch Dr. Who in "Flicker Vision" - i.e. NTSC camera copies of Nth generation PAL recordings. Yuck.
I've got an episode of "OOTU" on 16mm film (B&W) -- haven't gotten around to screening it yet though...

"Welcome Home" survives at the BBC in broadcast standard quality (on a D3 copy of the original quad, which itself resides at the NFTVA alongside surviving BBC 2" tapes - if memory serves).
It is one of 5 surviving stories from the 4th series of OOTU.

no doubt you got that from UKnova its been nicked from a BBC Timecode VHS which are used by the bbc internally for viewing material but these things leak out, though that looks exceptionally bad quality no doubt a copy of a copy etc

My fault - I upped it to UKNova 'cos people asked me to despite the quality. You'll find most of the existing eps there eventually and some are even worse quality - you have been warned!

Hm You're the first to mention this. You ought to pm me on UKNova - but I'm a Mac user so you may find the best media player for my files is Apple's Quicktime.

They claim to have "Sex and Violence" (Doomwatch); whilst I wouldn't buy a pirate copy, does anyone know, assuming they're genuine, they might have got a copy? Has the episode been broadcast overseas or leaked from the archives?

Has the episode been broadcast overseas or leaked from the archives? Yes, 'nth' generation copies of Sex and Violence have been in circulation for years. I've seen it, and it's highly over-rated IMHO. Jon

I've had this episode for about 20 years (yes, it's been on the circuit that long!) but it's very much like the other surviving third series Doomwatch episodes: very wordy and slow. Not much really happens. You'd think with a title like that, it would have a little of the spark of the first series episodes. It doesn't. Doomwatch was a great series that should have ended after two series though.

I would like to point out that I have everything they list (well the UK stuff) and I am happy to upload it to UKNova for FREE. Don't feed the pirates and buy the genuine releases when (and if) they come out. Oh and I'm not anonymous on UKNova - just trying to be a little discrete on this board.

Thanks Ethantyler and anonymous for explaining pirates, I'm glad I didn't order it.

It is one of 5 surviving stories from the 4th series of OOTU. The story I heard was that the original tape was sent to a TV station in Dubai (with 'Shattered eye' and ' chopper' masters in 1976? I thought the one at the BBC had been transferred from the master before that was sent abroad? However the problem here on quality is that the source is obviously a VHS viewing copy repeatedly transferred. Modern VHS machines handle transfers with less instability than they used to, but the colour eventually bleeds then eventually disappears altogether.

This is due to what is known as noise build up due to VHS & S-VHS been analogue systems. Even modern machines would have this problem with the colour bleeding away once you are at 10th generation plus. If you have first or second generation copies that are moved to digital media like DVD-R for example then it does not matter how many generations down you go after this with regards to noise levels!
