Just been watching some DVD's that my son has been getting into - yes- good old Zippy and Co in Rainbow.
These commercial DVD's only seem to have episodes from 1985 onwards (although one has the very first episode from 72)
My question is: Does anyone know how well Rainbow is represented in Freemantle/Thames archive? I know 70's edition's do exist, but was puzzled that there was nothing pre 1985 on these discs!

It's been discussed before, but nobody actually came up with an answer!
So, the question still stands - aside from the first half dozen episodes (which definitely exist) and a few film recordings of episodes that have been shown at Kaleidoscope events, how much before 1980 is still around..?

So, the question still stands - aside from the first half dozen episodes (which definitely exist) and a few film recordings of episodes that have been shown at Kaleidoscope events, how much before 1980 is still around..? I'm surprised Rob you confirm the first 6 - this is good news as I was only aware of the first editions survival ('72). All I would add is that 'best childrens TV of the decade 70s' VHS featured an early Geoffrey Hayes clip. In this the resident band (different from the one in the first show) are dressed in a 1974 - 75 style. Difficult to pin it down, but I think I may have read somewhere of a gap with some material then from 1974 - 75. What is definite is that the ITV technicians Xmas shows for 1977 and 78 feature a few 'Rainbow' out takes. It might be safe to conclude that some complete editions from that period existed on VT along with the duff takes, and may still exist. I think the DVDs were probably compiled with 80s shows (otherwise) as the compilers were assuming many of the parents would be twenty somethings who might buy the piece for their own nostalgia. There is a current swing (for those reasons) towards 80s nostalgia. From someone who lived through the 60s, 70s and 80s though I'd say God knows why anyone would want to relive the latter decade over again!!!
