That's a bizarre release: a single standalone episode existing. Must be a record! It wasn't recently discovered though - what are they talking about there?!?

Network's 'Our House' and 'Knight Errant',and 'Lollipop Loves Mr.Mole' DVDs were a bit on the length-challenged side, too. Are we talking tele-snaps for other episodes?

I think we must be! Although those other series had at least a couple more episodes in the set, I suppose it is encouraging that the BFI are prepared to release random episodes on DVD in this way, in very much the grand traditon of Network (whose TV releases are R.I.P., it seems). I'm not that bothered about telesnap recreations though and I certainly wouldn't be interested in a DVD set which was mainly comprised of them (as this set would seem to be). The BFI would be better off spending the money on (e.g.) getting the RT to prepare a colour recovered / VidFired version of Year Of The Sex Olympics for this batch of SF releases, to make it even stronger.

That's just a cobbled together effort representing work in progress. I doubt it will end up that way. I know the price will also be provisional, but I wouldn't consider paying £14 for a single 50 minute episode release unless there were some pretty amazing extras to back it up (and not telesnap reconstructions either)! As pleased as I am that Of Of This World is getting put on to DVD, I'm perplexed as to why the BFI decided to bring something as incomplete as this out over many other things that would make more sense (e.g. a restoration of Year Of The Sex Olympics or selections of the many SF / fantasy themed single plays or serials broadcast over the years which exist in full). The BFI have rather (pleasantly) surprised me though with their upcoming set of SF releases so I hope they continue apace!

Can you imaging how many returns there are going to be over this, and how many tears at Christmas? "There you are,Gramps. That should keep you happy over Christmas. And the New Year!".

I guess it's too much to hope for when it says "the surviving episodes" "based on stories by Isaac Asimov, Philip K dick and Tom Godwin"!

Yes, "surviving episodeS" (plural). That blurb sounds like the one initially attached to the Out Of The Unknown release though (incorrect there too). It would maybe have made more sense to place this on an anthology DVD of orphaned SF plays or similar. Anyone actually expecting more than one single episode is going to be very disappointed.

Does anybody know where the surviving episode "Lost Robot" was found, and when? Ditto for the two soundtracks. Just curious to know.

I'm guessing but it probably turned up in (what was left of the) the ABC archive, whoever owned it at that point. It's been around or known about since at least the '80s so I would think it just turned up in the vault as being the only one left. It is possible it could have been an early recovery from somewhere though.

From: www.britishtelevisiondrama.org.uk/?p=213Little Lost Robot, from an Isaac Asimov story, is the only episode of the series of which a recording exists, though it too was originally thought to have been lost. The telerecording was rediscovered in 1991 by TV enthusiast group Kaleidoscope at the Pinewood film store of Lumiere, who had taken possession of ABC’s archive.
