What I'm quite hopeful for is that in the not too distant future we'll be able to construct a computer which can model the causal relationships of everything in the universe - uncertainty principles notwithstanding. Then we'll just feed it a picture of the world as it is today and let it deduce what all of those missing doctor who episodes must have looked like.

Watched part 1 colour animated last night; thought it was brilliant. I'm not sure I'll ever watch the animated part 2 - can't bring myself to do that when we have the actual one. Looking forward to the rest, though - especially part 4, which must hold the record for the longest sequence with barely any dialogue in it (Wheel 1 would be the other contender).

Stephen Cranford did start, but as far as I know never finish (about 8 minutes if I recall), a reconstruction of TP4 prior to the telesnap find, where he used footage of the other three episodes. Don't know if that ever got out and about.

Although he certainly says "we have an idea", he does then go on to talk about the "person who has it". Watching that bit (at 18:50) gave me a strong impression that he does know who has it, but that he's still negotiating with them.
There are sort of gaps in the story about how it got lost, like just *how* were they infiltrated, but I'll accept that in the light of the above he's not going to give away too many details.
I wish him all the luck.

Broadly, I think that there are only really two reasons (I accept now) why Phil wouldn't simply explain what happened w.r.t. WoF 3:
The first is that doing so would lead directly to the current owner of WoF 3 and he's protecting them because he's hoping that they will one day return the print (to all of us).
The second (assuming that the first isn't true) is that he feels embarrassed about messing it up.
If it is the second, and he's reading this, please don't be embarrassed. We all make mistakes and it would be better for all of us if we knew the truth. Other people might be able to pick up the threads and carry on the good work of trying to find it.
I haven't heard or seen Phil's statement about having an idea who has it, actually. Do you have a link? If he has fully explained what happened then this is all moot conjecture anyway.

I suppose if I come back to my original question - does Phil know where WoF 3 is? - I think if he doesn't, then he might as well tell us the whole story, but if he does, then he won't want to reveal who it is so as not to upset them.
So, working the logic backwards, since he hasn't told us the whole story, I'm guessing he does know where it is.

That's understandable.
I wonder why Phil won't just come out and say so now? If it is in the station manager's hands, and he has either destroyed it or we have no hope of ever seeing it, why not just tell us what really happened?

What do you make of Paul V's statement yesterday that Phil thought getting WoF 3 was just a formality? Doesn't that suggest to you that he does know who has it?

I distinctly remember hearing a story that the reason we lost WoF3 was because Phil told someone about his find. I might be wrong, of course, but I have that strong recollection.

There can't have been *many* people who knew of the recovery before everyone else did, and who were therefore able to leap in and grab that one before the rest of them got back to the UK.
(I do think this issue is a bit of a web-covered elephant in the room, BTW)

Do we believe that Phil knows who has WoF 3?

Ok, I've just watched the animation (just binge-watched the whole 6 episodes), and I thought it did a great job of illustrating the episode and making it much easier to follow and understand.
I was particularly impressed by the way the animators had produced some sort of action to match every bump, scrape and squeak on the sound-track.
In terms of constructive criticism, I will cite three things:
1) I didn't like the yeti; I thought they looked too much like they were made from mud rather than fur. 2) The tube map didn't show the circle line completely in black, which was a little bit jarring for me in the early part of the episode when that's exactly what everyone is talking about. 3) Although I applaud the fact that the animators were trying to use their media to the best of their ability, as opposed to being driven by the original media, and I could see how there was much interesting gesticulation going on, ultimately I would have preferred something more akin to how it was originally shot, with more close ups, and almost a sort of animation between the telesnaps with the telesnaps recognisably in place.
But, you know, it was good, and I'm sure I'll watch it again.

It's not disingenous in the slightest. As is always the case, the people that express disatisfaction are a relatively small group, a number of which who post the same thing in multiple forums. There are also quite a number around who have indicated that they think the animation is fine and shows good future promise. And yes, there have already been moans about the brief 12 seconds worth of "very high standard" animation in the Evil trailer. "Why are Jamie's eyes completely different sizes?" "Why his Jamie's head so static when his neck is bouncing up and down?" etc. Let me have a brief optimistic moment that when all these experiments in animation are completed, we will go back and use the best techniques we've discovered and developed and re-do the whole lot of them in the best possible way. Realistically, I would never have imagined EOTW was out there, or Web for that matter, though that one was often the subject of much wishful thinking.
Interestingly, the 3 classics of the Troughton era were considered to be Tomb, Evil and Web - so we've not done bad there.
