Let's start at the beginning with S01E01. Most of the show relies on audio clips but there are usually two rounds in each episode that feature short video/film clips. For each performance I've listed where and when I believe they originated from. S01E01, Round 2 features: Cliff Richard - Turn Me Loose (Oh Boy! 1959) Bad Company - Good Lovin' Gone Bad (promo film? 1975) S01E01, Round 5 uses: Kate Bush - Wow (Hammersmith Odeon, 1979) Jimi Hendrix - Hey Baby (Rainbow Bridge, 1970) Elvis Costello & the Attractions - (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea (Countdown, 1978) Beatles - She Loves You (ABC Ardwick, Manchester, 1963) S01E01, End Credits: Steely Dan - Reeling in the Years (Old Grey Whistle Test, 1973) So, as you can see, this episode sourced 7 music videos and they're not all clips that you would expect to find at the BBC, e.g. the Cliff clip was from ITV, the Elvis Costello clip from Dutch TV and the Beatles clip from Pathe News. I haven't been able to track down S01E02 but Mike Morton has it, I believe, so it's over to you, Mike...

Mark Tinkler, archive consultant on Series 5, has created a separate thread detailing all the clips selected for those shows. You can view those posts here...Out of 56 shows, the BBC library database only listed the clips used for 14 shows (and two of those lists have been found to be incomplete). The other 42 shows (including the whole of Series 1, 2 and 5) have never been properly catalogued. This thread will hopefully correct that... To make it easier to keep track of the information in this thread I've created a searchable online database that can be accessed here...Once this project is completed we will finally be able to answer the following questions: Q1. Which episode of Pop Quiz included a clip of The Jackson 5 on TOTP performing "Lookin' Through The Windows"? Q2. Which episode of Pop Quiz included a clip of David Bowie on TOTP performing "The Jean Genie"? Q3. Which episode of Pop Quiz included a clip of Pink Floyd performing "See Emily Play"? Q4. Were any other clips used in the show that are now classified as "missing"? February 2021:It's taken 10 years but this project has now been completed! I have personally watched EVERY EPISODE of Pop Quiz listed above! Thank you to everyone who contributed along the way. The answers to the questions that I originally posed are as follows: A1. A short clip clip of The Jackson 5 on TOTP performing "Lookin' Through The Windows" is included in S02E09. A2. None! S01E02 featured a live performance of "The Jean Genie" from Musikladen. S02E02 ended with David Bowie on TOTP in 1972 performing "Starman". S02E08 contained a clip of David Bowie performing "Ziggy Stardust" from the 1973 Ziggy Stardust concert. S03E08 ended with David Bowie on OGWT in 1972 performing "Oh! You Pretty Things". Recollections of "The Jean Genie" from TOTP were obviously a false memory from seeing one or more of the above clips. Thankfully, though, "The Jean Genie" TOTP performance was recovered late in 2011 from BBC cameraman John Henshall's video collection. A3. None! S04E02 contained a clip of Pink Floyd in 1968 performing "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun". S04E13 contained a clip of Pink Floyd in 1967 performing "Astronomy Domine". A4. When Gerry Rafferty died in January 2011 a clip from Pop Quiz S04E02 was used that featured Stealer's Wheel performing "Stuck in the Middle With You" on TOTP in 1973. This led the BBC to uncover the full TOTP performance that was hiding in their archive. Other rarities that were included during Series 4 are as follows: S04E09 features Rod Stewart and the Faces performing "You Can Make Me Dance, Sing Or Anything" (b&w footage from 1974) S04E11 includes a clip of Family on TOTP (27-08-70) performing "Weaver's Answer". S04E12 includes a clip of Rod Stewart and the Faces on TOTP (17-08-72) performing "You Wear It Well".My searchable online Pop Quiz database can be found here...
