Please do not take Boy George as gospel. Could it possibly have been a Jon Moss from Culture Club episode (Boy George's boyfriend at the time)? He appeared on the show twice - once in '83 and again in '84. Neither of his episodes seem to be available anywhere so they can't be ruled out. In face, George Michael appeared on the show twice too and no-one seems to have copies of his episodes either - very strange! You might think '83 or '84 is too late for missing clips but the Gerry Rafferty/Stealer's Wheel clip was on a 1984 episode that no-one seems to have (Series 4, Episode 2) so it's not that far-fetched...

I definitely have the 2/10/84 Pop Quiz on VHS. That's great, Trevor. Can you dig it out and make a list of the clips shown in it, please?

I'm missing the 1984 Xmas special of Pop Quiz (someone must have recorded it, surely?) but here's the info on another special that aired just a few days later. It was the only edition of Pop Quiz to have TEN players - all five members of Duran Duran vs. all five members of Spandau Ballet. S04E14Round 1 was guess the intro.
Round 2 was a "Winter" compilation using b&w archive footage as usual.
Round 3 was the lyric round.
Round 4 was spot the star and name the backwards music.
Round 5 was the video round (at last!) 3 recent videos overdubbed with different music. Name the titles and artists.Thompson Twins - You Take Me Up (promo, 1984) Elton John - Passengers (promo, 1984) Madness - Our House (promo, 1982) Herbie Hancock - Rockit (promo, 1983) Culture Club - The War Song (promo, 1984) Yazoo - Don't Go (promo, 1982) Round 6 was the individual round.Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (live, 1984) Dire Straits - Tunnel of Love (live, 1983) Genesis - Ripples (live, 1976) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (The Song Remains the Same, 1976) Grace Jones - Do or Die (live, 1978?) I've no idea where this footage comes from. There are several different videos for this song on YouTube but not this one...Queen - Jailhouse Rock (OGWT, 1975) Mike introduced this clip as Queen, Christmas 1974, but we all know it's Hammersmith Odeon, Xmas Eve, 1975 The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset (Christmas Concert, 1977) My favourite version of this song. It was great to see it in full in the recent Kinks at the BBC compilation.Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road (No Nukes, 1980) The Clash - Bankrobber (promo, 1980) Generation X - King Rocker (TOTP, 1979) Round 6 was the quick-fire round.End CreditsCilla Black and Marc Bolan - Life's a Gas (Cilla Black Show, 1973) That's it for 1984! Pop Quiz wasn't to be seen again until its return in 1994...
There are still plenty of episodes from the first four series of Pop Quiz that don't appear to be available anywhere! I'm still looking for: Series 1 - Episodes 3, 5, 6, 8 plus a complete version of Episode 7 Series 2 - Episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12 plus a complete version of Episode 11 Series 3 - Episodes 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 11 Series 4 - Episodes 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13 Can you help?Either post details below, or if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can PM me here, or contact me via Facebook or Twitter.

This show from October 1984 was the last regular episode of Pop Quiz to be hosted by Mike Read. It featured only 6 clips that could be considered "archive" ( i.e. more than 7 years since their original broadcast): S04E12Round 1Paul McCartney - Pipes of Peace (promo, 1983) Junior - Mama Used to Say (promo, 1982) Paul Young - Come Back and Stay (promo, 1983) JoBoxers - Boxerbeat (promo, 1983) Tracey Ullman - They Don't Know (promo, 1983) ABC - Poison Arrow (promo, 1982) Round 5Richard Thompson - Tear Stained Letter (live, 1983) Pete Townshend - Uniforms (promo, 1982) This next one makes me laugh. Mike Read to Phil Collins: "Cap'n Phil, for you a good ol' clip of Martha & the Vandellas singing `He's a Walking Miracle`." It certainly would've been a miracle as they never recorded that song! Watch this mistake on YouTube
Limmie & the Family Cooking - A Walking Miracle (TOTP, 1974) Mike refers to this next clip as "Song of a Baker Man" ;D The Small Faces - Song of a Baker (Colour Me Pop, 1968) Otis Redding - Respect (Soul To Soul, 1971) Cat Stevens - Changes IV (live, 1971) Rolling Stones - Going to a Go-Go (live, 1981) I would guess the old film footage used for this song is totally unrelatedRonnie Wood - Seven Days (1979) Rod Stewart and the Faces - You Wear It Well (TOTP, 1972) Will Powers - Kissing With Confidence (promo, 1983) I can't see Health & Safety allowing this kind of stunt anymore!Todd Rundgren - Utopia (1974) Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell (promo, 1977) End CreditsThe Who - Join Together (promo, 1972) Although there's no screenshot for this, you do get to hear Mike introduce it before the tape cuts out. "That's it for the current series. We'll be back with a new series next year and also a Christmas Special. We'll leave you tonight with a great performance from the early seventies of the Who, down at Shepperton Studios, singing 'Join Together'."
Unfortunately, it was over 10 years before the next series!

I haven't been able to track down copies or info on S04E08 or S04E09 so we'll have to skip those for the time being. I do have a high quality copy of the following, though: S04E10Round 2Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (promo, 1983) Ultravox - Vienna (promo, 1981) Men Without Hats - Safety Dance (promo, 1982) Malcolm McLaren - Buffalo Gals (promo, 1982) Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart (promo, 1983) ZZ Top - Sharp Dressed Man (promo, 1983) Round 5Jam - That's Entertainment (promo, 1981) Roxy Music - Virginia Plain (TOTP, 1972) Chuck Berry - Nadine (live, 1982) Phil Collins - Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away (live, 1983) Aretha Franklin - Climbing Higher Mountains (live, 1972) Eagles - Doolin' Dalton/Desperado (Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, 1974) Round 6"Doctors" montage of b&w film clips (c) Filmfinders End CreditsThe Troggs - Wild Thing (promo, 1966) Very little "archive" footage was used in this episode. It relied heavily on promo videos from the previous three years with just a few seventies clips and one sixties promo to end the show.

Continuing on with Series 4, here are the last few BBC Archive details that haven't been posted yet: S04E05B/W FILM: Compilation of clips featuring children c. 1920s-30s (c) Filmfinders (1.48) Rolling Stones - "Jumping Jack Flash" (c) Filmfinders (0.43) Loving Spoonful - "You Didn't Have To Be Nice" (c) Filmfinders (0.45) The Jacksons - "I Want You Back" (c) Motown (2.46) COL FILM: Stevie WONDER - "Very Superstitious" (c) Music Linden (0.57) Earth Wind & Fire - "Boogie Wonderland" (c) CBS (0.59) DUPE: Joe WALSH - "Turn To Stone" ex OGWT (0.50) Dave EDMUNDS - "I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock'n'Roll" ex TOTP tx 23.6.77 (0.31) PROMO VIDEOS: Talking Heads - "Burning Down The House" (c) WEA (0.36) Culture Club - "I'll Tumble For You" (c) Virgin (0.35) Whoever catalogued this episode has given us the length of the clips used and has grouped them by source. We'll need someone who has a copy of this to sort them into the right order. However, from the information below we can ascertain that the playout track over the end credits would have been black and white film footage of the Jacksons, "I Want You Back". There are plenty of different colour versions of this song on YouTube - I can't find any black and white so I've no idea which performance they used!S04E06VT CLIPS: Beatles sing "Day Tripper" 1965 (1.50-2.09) Marmalade sing "Obladi Ob- lada" 1969 (3.35-3.50) Fleetwood Mac play "Albatross" 1969 (3.50-4.10) Pretenders sing "Message of Love" (15.23-16.04) Robert PALMER sings "Bad Case Of Loving You" (18.09-18.53) Souixie & The Banshees sing "Dear Prudence" (21.32-22.08) Donna SUMMER & Musical Youth sing "Unconditional Love" (22.53-23.43) FASHION MONTAGE: inc b/w & col tight ed ftge: clothes, make up & pasttimes from 1950s to 1970s (8.27-9.51) B/W FILM SEQS: Roger MILLER sings "King of the Road" 1965 (1.37-1.50) Joan BAEZ sings "There but For Fortune" 1965 (2.09-2.30) Love Affair sing "Bringing on Back the Good Times" 1969 (3.13-3.35) Little Richard sings "Long Tall Sally" (16.27-17.12) Everly Brothers & Tennessee Ernie FORD sing "Rattlesnake Daddy" (19.19-20.25) Cliff RICHARD & The Shadows sing "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On" 1964 (28.19-29.34, credits over from 29.02) Once again the clips have been grouped by source. However, this time we can work out the running order by using the start and end timings.S04E07Thomas DOLBY 'Hyperactive' - promo video (11.45-12.29) Wilson PICKETT 'In The Midnight Hour' - promo video (11.45-12.29) John LENNON 'Slippin & A-slidin' - recording studio (14.16-14.54) David BOWIE 'Queen Bitch' - studio (15.32-16.16) PRINCE 'Little Red Corvette' in concert (17.02-18.07) B52s 'Legal Tender' - promo video (18.45-19.26) Peter FRAMPTON 'Show Me The Way' - studio (26.19-26.40) Steve HARLEY 'Here Comes The Sun' - studio (26.40-26.54) Rod STEWART 'Tonights The Night' - studio (26.54-27.13) BAY CITY ROLLERS 'Shangalang' - studio (28.07-28.22) ROLLING STONES 'It's Only Rock & Roll' - studio (28.22-28.40) WIZZARD 'Rock & Roll Winter' - studio (28.40-29.03) Ike & Tina TURNER 'I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine '- studio (32.21-34.17) This episode has already been listed, complete with screenshots, by forum member Mike Morton (see page 2). I've included the archived info here for completeness. It's the last of the 14 episodes of Pop Quiz that the BBC have officially catalogued!

jonathan king (100ton and feather) chopped from repeat of 15/07/76 : 28/07/11 So much for their promise of unedited repeats... Why chop a Ruby Flipper performance? Are all JK songs banned by the BBC?

You say there are nine episodes missing from the first series yet I have access and download facilities to episodes 1-4 (5 is missing) 6-9 (10 is missing) 11 (12-15 are missing) 16-29 (30 is missing) 31-42. If you look hard enough you can actually find every Doctor Who episode online! Audio recordings exist for all the "lost" episodes and fans have made "recons" using telesnaps. There are also some very good animations available for some of the missing episodes. I recently watched every Hartnell episode in order for the first time recently. I'm currently working my way through all the Troughton episodes...

It's been a week now since this thread was started so it's time to review what has been discovered so far. Although numerous clips from early Pop Quiz episodes are available online they all seem to be sourced from the same home recordings that have been doing the rounds for years. All of the available Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 clips have now been catalogued in this thread ( click here for an up to date list). There are still many gaps, though. It's seems that only the episodes featuring big names like Cliff or Roger Taylor were recorded and shared through fan networks. From Series 1 we are still missing details on Episodes 3, 5, 6 and 8. Thankfully, one of the episodes not in circulation, Episode 6, was saved from certain destruction by Kaleidoscope. It features the late, great, Phil Lynott and Chas Chandler and was recently screened at a Kal event. Does anyone know what clips are in it? The biggest hole to be filled, though, is Series 2. We only know what was shown in 3 of the 12 episodes (and one of those shows is incomplete). The other 9 shows from 1982 have completed eluded us. It appears that quiz shows were not something that you recorded and kept 30 years ago. What we really need is for the BBC to repeat all these classic shows. I had hoped that they would reappear on UK Gold in the nineties when loads of programmes, unseen since their first broadcast, suddenly started floodings the airwaves, having finally been transferred from 2" and 1" onto BetacamSP. Since then, of course, the whole world has gone digital, requiring shows to be copied once again onto Digibeta and HDD. Our only hope is that these series become available online when the BBC launch their pay per view iPlayer. I will continue adding the remaining info on Pop Quiz episodes I have, although these are all from Series 4 (1984) and Series 5 (1994). Anyone with further information on Series 1, 2 and 3 please post below...

Here's another rarity - the complete Xmas Special from 1981: S01E09Round 1The panel had to guess the year of the following songs: The Who - Tommy Can You Hear Me? (1975) According to the end credits this is an extract from the movie "The Kids Are Alright" so I guess the year should really be 1979. The movie "Tommy" was released in 1975, although I guess this clip could have been filmed even earlier. Elton John - Philadelphia Freedom (1975) 10cc - I'm Not in Love (1975) Rod Stewart - Sailing (1975) Sandie Shaw - Long Live Love (1965) Eric Burdon and the Animals - It's My Life (1965) The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling (1965) Rolling Stones - The Last Time (1965) Round 2 was the individual round and included the following 3 videoclips: Spandau Ballet - Chant No. 1 (promo, 1981) Adam and the Ants - Antmusic (promo, 1980) Shakin' Stevens - You Drive Me Crazy (promo, 1981) Round 3 was the lyric round. Mike then introduced Roy Wood who came on dressed as Santa to deliver presents to the panel. In fact, they were boxes containing clues to No.1 hits that the panel had to guess the title of. Round 4 featured a montage of old B&W Christmas related film footage. Round 5 was the quick-fire round and included just one videoclip: Fun Boy Three - The Lunatics Have Taken Over the Asylum End CreditsThe Beatles - We Can Work It Out Many thanks to Dave Hall for providing the first part of this episode.

This is the last remaining Series 3 episode that I'm able to confirm the clip info for. It has been partially catalogued by the BBC Archive but they omitted the last three clips - so there are at least a couple of screenshots for you to identify! I've used the BBC info for the first few rounds - can you spot their spelling mistake? S03E05Round 1Little Feet perform "Rock & Roll Doctor" in studio ex OGWT (1.29-2.20) Gary Numan performs "Cars" ex TOTP (2.40-3.20) Dire Straits perform "Sultans of Swing" ex OGWT (3.49-4.32) Rod Stewart performs "Hot Legs" ex "Russell Harty" (5.34-6.16) Captain Beefheart performs "Icecream for Crow" ex Virgin Records (7.38-8.26) Janis Joplin performs "Ball & Chain" ex Monterey Pop (9.05-10.07) Round 2Montage of dupe ftge of mixed (c) to illus clips from 10 songs on the theme of weather (17.36-19.22) Round 4Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues (promo, 1965) Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley (The T.A.M.I. Show, 1964) End creditsFree - My Brother Jake (TOTP?, 1971) This clip has also been shown on TOTP2 but I'm not sure it's actually from TOTP?

The episode below can be found in very poor quality on YouTube. Unfortunately, all the music clips have been edited down to a second or less so the screenshots are more a demonstration of the different video transitions in use during the 80s. Luckily this episode was catalogued by the Beeb so I've used their descriptions to identify the songs: S03E04Round 3B/W Everley BROTHERS perf 'Walk Right Back' (5.16-6.16) B/W BEATLES perf 'From Me To You' inc screaming fans (6.56-8.02) Round 5B/W Aretha FRANKLIN perf 'It's In His Kiss' (13.45-14.35) B/W Billy PRESTON perfs 'Satisfaction' (15.04-15.51) B/W BEACH BOYS perf 'Bluebirds Over The Mountains' (16.51-17.23) Tom PETTY perfs 'Shout' (18.23-19.20) Ian HUNTER & MOTT THE HOOPLE perf 'Honaloochie Boogie' (19.49-20.35) CLASH perf 'Rock the Casbah' (21.06-21.50) End CreditsTHE WHO perf 'I Can See For Miles' (25.39-end; titles over at 28.48)

Great stuff, Neil. The BBC Archive info on S03E02 simply says "VT prog, ex-lib & cpyrt film & VT inserts, film titles, stills" so it's great to find out exactly what was on it. Their description for the next episode is a lot better:
S03E03 B&W: Traffic perform "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" in studio (8.54-9.41) COL: Queen perform "Killer Queen" in studio on TOTP (10.29-11.02) COL: Randy NEWMAN performs "Simon Smith" in studio (11.36-12.31) COL: The Doobie Brothers perform "China Grove" at outdoor concert in USA (13.40-14.44) COL: Ian DURY performs "What a Waste" in studio, his first performance on TOTP (15.32-16.32) B&W: Marianne FAITHFULL performs "Come Stay With Me" in studio (17.28-18.18) B&W & COL COMPILATION: Rolling Stones perform "Time Is On My Side" extract from film "Let's Spend the Night Together" (25.53-28.55)
I've managed to find copies of S03E04 and S03E05 and will post full details of those later today. Still need info for S03E06, though, which is described as simply "studio vt, cpyt film inserts, ex-lib footage, sp s film titles".
