cjones that's a very good idea in your original post from last year. Dan S you may well be right that no episodes exist in the hands of private hoarders. But isnt it worth dangling that carrot to see if anything does appear? This plan has more teeth than idly looking around car boot sales and jumble sales.

I resurrected this idea because the press is currently abuzz with anything 'Who' and it pays dividends to strike while the iron is hot. Many here embroiled in 'Whodom' should look outside the box and see how Joe Public perceive the BBC. If the BBC are willing to pay £25,000 for Myleene Klass to host a 10 minute lottery show and illegally hand out million pound retirement pay-offs to their executive chums, then they can jolly well cough up and reward someone who has expended perhaps years tracking down and clinching the purchase of a long lost show. I agree Myleene Klass is nothing to do with this debate, but it's all to do with public perception.
In the past the corporation has treated collectors like peasants flouting copyright law. It was very officious and highhanded in its manner and it left a sour taste in the mouth which prevails to this day. £5000 is crumbs to the BBC but would be significant in making that first appreciative gesture to recognize the efforts of fans and collectors over the years. Of course the BBC will never offer money hence the post suggesting we take up the mantle.

Whilst those stalwart chaps from KAL are fighting the good fight in darkest Africa, loyal fans in the home guard back here in Britain need to demonstrate some initiative while newspaper presses are running hot and 'Who Fever' reaches its crescendo over November/December. A more bold and enterprising strategy is called for. My proposal is simple: offer money. Imagine the tabloid headlines: 'Who fans raised the bar this week by offering £5000 in return for lost episodes". I say £5k but it could be £10k, in which case a celebrity coming forward pledging the lions share at this time would be a godsend and really boost the appeal. Someone ringing the Daily Mail news desk today with that offer will make it into print tomorrow guaranteed - but it would add more weight as a collective.
My reasoning behind this is that if there are any rogue remaining lost episodes in this country, they are probably by now in the hands of dealers/traders. As these guys only speak one language- MONEY- let's talk to them in the lingo they understand, get our hands grubby and offer them some. If nothing else a guerdon would act as a lure, flushing out and revealing who, if anyone is hoarding, and open up fresh avenues for investigation. I do consider this is the optimum time for action. If no celebrity knight in shining armour is forthcoming, it's left to us troops on the ground. But the task looks achievable to me - 50 members each pledging £100 - not a lot is it?

Thanks Ray, for the record Cliff and the Shadows do perform on the show (albeit a mime) of their latest single- 'Blue Turns To Grey' - a cracking good song written for them by the Stones' Keith Richards & Mick Jagger.

If this gets commissioned for tv Laurence, my subsequent goal would be to release a much more fuller comprehensive version on DVD. My home-edit runs just short of 2 hours. If the BBC disappoint, then my hopes rest with either ITV, Channel 4 or Sky Arts. So far none have responded. A commercial tv version will no doubt have all detail extracted and dumbed down to please your average gormless ITV audience. That's why i was pinning my hopes on a BBC4 commission to do it justice. Worst case nightmare scenario would be a banal half hour ITV slot and Paddy McGuinness doing the narration! God forbid!

I've never heard of that one Peter. Will check with ITV , but i suspect like Jack Good's edition of 'This Is Your Life' broadcast (i think) sometime in 1969, it no longer survives.
'Oh Boy!' was rehashed by ATV in 1979 of course, and those editions all survive. Clearances on those clips and Jack's US series 'Shindig' in particular- will prove too costly for me to produce this independently.
Agree with you re. Flirtations being underated. They appeared weekly on the 1972 'It's Cliff Richard' series for the BBC (all wiped!). Wasn't the lead singer Pearly Gates? She became a regular solo guest on Cliff's series a couple of years later in 1974.

That's a clip from one of the two surviving 'Oh Boy! shows Simon - namely 4th April 1959. Star of the show that week was 14 year old Brenda Lee, making her British tv debut.

Thanks Greg. Hiring a camera will be my next task if this latest pitch to the BBC proves unsuccessful.

Exactly right Gary. With interviews, professional editing and most expensive of all clearances of pictures, music and tv footage (commercial rates for film are currently £1000 -£1500 for each minute used) you wont see much change out of £50k. Also tv companies dont accept docus made by individuals. Pitches have to be made via one of the reputable production companies they recognize. That's why all these independent production houses won't do anything to help develop a project until that promise of a commission. When they knew the Beeb were sniffing around, they all suddenly got interested. But despite convincing all the seemingly-right people at the BBC -ie commissioning editors (as in this case) - none of that matters if the controller doesn't care for it. He/she effectively plays God.

Hi Ray, I located and dated this clip about 10 years ago and a short sequence from it was included in a 2003 docu I worked on called 'The Real Cliff Richard' broadcast on Channel 4. Here's my notes relating to it: <Cliff's 18th appearance on “Oh Boy!”and the penultimate show of the series. A rare outtake from this show (Cliff performing his newly released 4th single “Mean Streak”) only survives today because it was included in the documentary the 'ABC of ABC' - A Souvenir with Music' made in April 1966 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of ABC Television. The complete telerecording of the full 23rd May 'Oh Boy!' 1959 show was obviously available to producers at that time but has since gone missing.>
UPDATE ON DOCUMENTARY PROPOSAL My attempts to get my documentary about 'Oh Boy! commissioned have thus far proved unsuccessful. I found out just a fortnight ago that BBC4 controller Richard Klein turned it down. It's a decision i find hard to swallow, considering my home-made edit of the docu includes footage from the newly discovered lost show from 28th March 1959, as well as restored clips from the 2 surviving editions in Canal Image's archive. Rare 'Oh Boy!'soundtracks recorded live from the Hackney Empire are also featured plus a cache of 400 previously unseen pictures. I'd also lined up a number of celebrities who'd agreed to be interviewed, including a couple of 'The Shadows' and producer Jack Good who has been so supportive throughout.
All may not be lost however. I'm due to see yet another BBC 'Chief' early next month and i live in hope he will finally get this project moving elsewhere within the BBC. If that fails, then my archive and my project all get consigned to the bottom draw i'm afraid.

Cliff recorded 3 colour series of 'It's Cliff Richard' for the BBC in 1970, 1971 and 1972: 40 episodes in total of which only one is known to survive - the 5th show from the 1st series broadcast on 31st January 1970. That's the one that includes Mary Hopkin's 'Early In The Morning Of Your Life.'
However a ropey video recording of part of show 12 from this 1st series (21st March 1970) was sent to me about 15 years ago (origin unknown) which gives hope that at least one of the episodes survives in private hands. The 8 minute colour clip includes Cliff's opening performance of “On The Beach” and the show's finale - a rock ‘n’ roll medley, comprising 'Rip It Up/ See You Later Alligator/ All Shook Up/Rock Around the Clock/Peggy Sue/ Razzle Dazzle' .
I did speak to Cliff's now retired manager David Bryce about all of Cliff's series, and he said none of the 3 series sold abroad. That took me by surprise at the time, considering Cliff was a well-established star by 1970 with a huge fanbase in Europe. I've covered this topic extensively before if anyone wants to back-search. All the songs posters suggested could be from the lost shows - all plucked from youtube of course- turned out to be from Cliff's August Bank Holiday Specials from '70 & '71, and 'Cliff in Scandinavia' (Oct.70) which do survive at the BBC. There was also a belated 6 part series which aired in 1974. These too survive.
Paul Vanezis, if you're reading this, can you send me a quick email please.

Ray, this youtube clip is from the surviving BBC's 'Getaway With Cliff' August Bank Holiday Show from 1971. (the BBC have long held a copy!) Cliff & Olivia are actually singing 'When I'm 64' BUT its been overdubbed with an off-air recording from one of the missing 'It's Cliff Richard' shows from 1971! Thats the problem with these would-be youtube video editors - they create so much confusion. 'United We Stand' was performed by Olivia and Cliff on Saturday 20th March 1971 (the 12th show of the 13 part series) All are believed wiped!

Hi Ray, i posted the answer to this one a few years back. Its a Cliff Richard & The Shadows studio concert made by German television in May 1967 and now owned by ZDF . The concert was edited into two seperate tv shows. Id love to see them but getting anything out of ZDF is like getting blood out of a stone. Here are the contents to the 2 shows:
SHOW ONE 1. Rise & Fall of Flingel Bunt (Shadows) 2. The Minute You're Gone 3. Somewhere (Shadows) 4. Time Drags By 5. Spanish Harlem 6. A Little Bitty Tear (Shadows) 7. In The Country
SHOW TWO 1. Apache (Shadows) 2. Lucky Lips 3. Move It 4. Time Drags By (Repeat from Show One) 5. FBI (Shadows) 6. What'd I Say
