cv2000 405 lines - can it be transferred? Can someone just confirm my suspicions that the BFI (or other institutions) are able to make more sophisticated transfers? There are all sorts of problems with CV2000 material. Firstly it's a skip field system. On the face of it that isn't an issue. Secondly, getting a stable playback is a problem due to the age of the recordings and the state of the machines available to replay them. Assuming you could get a stable replay there is the issue of 405 lines. There are few modern timebase correctors that can handle 405 and in fact I've not found one... ...except that I believe I am the only person to have successfully transferred a 405 line CV2000 recording electronically to 625. It was 10 minutes of the 1967 'Cinderella' pantomime with Jimmy Tarbuck. The method I used was thus; the 405 signal went directly into a For-A 330 TBC. From there it went into a BVW-75P beta SP machine in E-E mode which solved the field jitter problem. From there it went Pal into a Charisma DVE to resize it to 4x3. The final recording went onto a digi-beta tape although I have no idea what happened to it! But regardless, I was only ever able to make that one recording. When there was a break in the recording a further part of it wouldn't go through the same process. In terms of quality, it was sub VHS by a rather large margin. Regards, Paul

There are 35 editions of Eamonn Andrews recorded that we have found a record of in Eds collection ranging from 1967 to April 1969.
I'll post a list of dates as soon as we've confirmed they exist!

Paul

You mentioned The World of Beachcomber. I have an episode of that, perhaps two. Hilarious. Are there episodes missing? I didn't realise. Was The Eamonn Andrews Show a talk show? Hi Dave. I think there are some if not all editions of 'Beachcomber' are missing although I don't know enough about the series to be sure; I'm sure others will chip in with the info. The Eamonn Andrews show was a light entertainment chat show with musical performances. Some excellent guests as I understand it. It was on either ABC or Associated Rediffusion; no idea what exists if anything apart from these audio recordings. Cheers, Paul

obviously his entire collection is being given to bbc worldwide so i presume it will be available for commercial use when its all been digitised & catalogued? do you know who is handling it at the beeb? obviously he must've made the recordings via the aerial socket with a line out rather than microphone giving such clear quality. Hi Paul. The collection isn't being given to anyone as such. Ed has kindly made it available to the BBC, not BBC Worldwide although they can license it if they wish. First and foremost, the material is for the use of the BBC when it eventually gets transferred. As there is quite a lot of material, I expect this to take some time; 3 tapes have been transferred in their entirety. I believe Ed said on his radio broadcast of 'Christmas Night with the Stars' that he used a couple of crocodile clips on his speaker terminals to get the signal off his TV. I suspect a rather heath robinson way of doing it... and possibly lethal! Regards, Paul

Hi Dave.
I visited Ed tonight with one of the restoration experts who worked on 'Room at the Bottom' and we went through a few other things. Ed also recorded the 1969 'Christmas Night with the Stars' which does exist (at least the 'Dad's Army' bit) but he has the whole edition. Other gems include many editions of 'The Eamonn Andrews Show', Dee Time, 'Marty', 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium', World of Beachcomber', 'Me Mammy', 'Broaden Your Mind', 'Horne-A-Plenty', 'Curry and Chips', 'The Likely Lads', 'The Rolf Harris Show', various 'Points of View' and a single (and therefore unique) edition of 'Junior Points of View'.
There is still more to go through and I'll be posting a full list in a separate thread in the next few days.
Cheers,
Paul

Apparently among the sketches were segments from Oh Brother, Harry Worth and Not In Front of the Children, not to mention Morcambe and Wise as hosts. Does the soundtrack to these lost segments now exist too? Hi Dave. Yes, the show exists in its entirety. There's also quite a bit of music, like an extract from the Dusty Springfield show with Spike Milligan! Bizarre. Valentine Dyall also appears. Regards, Paul

A reminder for those of you who don't know that Ed Doolan is broadcasting the lost 'Dad's Army' sketch from Christmas Night with the Stars 1968 today on his Radio WM show. It's on around 10.40am (in 40 mins or so) so listen if you can.
Merry Christmas to you all.
Cheers,
Paul

OK, Paul. How do we proceed? Hi Colin. The best thing to do is to send me via a PM as much information as you have. We can then arrange to have a listen. If you're in Birmingham you could pop into the Mailbox and we could have a listen there. Regards, Paul

Despite getting a poor response from the BBC some years ago, I might be willing to give this another try.... I wouldn't want to part with the original reels, for sentimental reasons. But would the BBC be interested in CD copies of all this material? Hi Colin. Yes, I'd be interested in listening to them certainly. I am sure some gaps could be filled. We do have now an almost complete audio of the Apollo 11 coverage but are on the lookout for anything which could cover what we don't have for that mission and all the others. Cheers, Paul

Did these Dad's Army recoveries come from Bob Monkhouse's collection? Or is that another unrelated topic? Hi Dave, The recordist/collector wasn't Bob Monkhouse, but Midlands Today may well be doing a feature on the individual next week. All will be revealed then! Regards, Paul

Hello all.
In addition to the 'Stripe for Frazer' audio recovery, the same collector has also returned to the BBC the complete soundtrack for 'Christmas Night with the Stars' 1968 which includes the 'Dads Army' Christmas sketch which was thought completely missing. The same programme also features some other unique material.
For other 'Dad's Army' fans, an off-air soundtrack of 'Room at the Bottom' was used from the same collector in the restoration of the new colour version which will be screened on December 13th.
Regards,
Paul

Is any of the recoloured footage available online? I'd love to see it! There are three frame grabs from the restored episode in the Radio Times; I've seen the version prior to the final grade and sound layback and it looks excellent. The sound was a bit optical film with various crackles and pops, so the midlands radio and tv recordist who has returned 'A Stripe for Frazer' has provided the soundtrack from his off-air recording. It is marginally superior to the film sound. Regards, Paul
