Did he actually return it, or just admit to having found it..? Phil returned prints of various episodes in 2018 and 2019. They are listed in the TIEA 2018 thread. 'My Old Man's a Tory' was amongst them and it was indeed an original 16mm print. In addition, I have secured for the BBC Archive a second 16mm print of 'My Old Man's a Tory', a better print of 'The Likely Lads: Entente Cordiale', also the original prints of 'A Star is Born' and 'Faraway Places', plus an original BBC Enterprises print of 'Dad's Army: The Battle of Godfrey's Cottage' as an alternative to the current archival print which has some scratching. Mostly.
I don't run Film is Fabulous and I obviously haven't been involved in the return of all 40 episodes. I have had an involvement in most of the recoveries, but not all, since 1988 which is what I said, but it would be easy for them to want to 'conflate' that little nugget.
Otherwise it is generally accurate.

Did literally nothing get saved? I notice there is a new film archive now (https://www.limassol.org.cy/en/istoriko-arxeio-kentro-meleton) My understanding is that the archive in Limassol is focused on the historical records of the city of Limassol only and not the island as a whole. Paul

Cause those 2 episodes (Episodes 4 and 5), along with some episodes of The Aztecs and The Sensorites, were stored in a vault in northern Nicosia, which was unfortunately destroyed in the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. The only reason the other episodes survived because they were in the main CyBC buildings in Southern Cyprus, where they escaped being touched by the Turks, since Turkey only focused on Northern Cyprus. This is incorrect. The building housing the Cyprus historical film archive, in which were several DW episodes was destroyed in the attempted coup that preceded the Turkish invasion.

Hi all, Following on from the Film is Fabulous event on October 29th, where I was contacted by a film collector who said he had an old Basil Brush film, I can now tell you all that the film is safe and will be returned to the BBC Archive. It's the 23rd of October 1970 edition, episode 6 of the 1970 Autumn run and is an uncut film recording made on the day of transmission. The film does contain chroma dots, but is also badly scratched at the beginning of the recording, damage which continues for several minutes. Still, it's better than nothing at all! The recording is from the same series which, just a month ago had no episodes representing it in any archive. Thanks to the Film is Fabulous initiative, there are now two. Sadly the reporter, who contacted John Franklin regarding publicising the Film is Fabulous event has mangled some of what John has said and wrote an article entirely focused on Doctor Who, despite John telling her he knew nothing about it.
It has been pointed out to the reporter that the headline (reluctance to return material) is untrue. It is simply not a priority for one collector who doesn't really care about DW. The whole 'amnesty' aspect was introduced by the reporter and not John and the fact that there has been a general amnesty for BBC material in private hands for at least 35 years could have been checked by the reporter by contacting the BBC Archive, which she obviously did not do.
A correction has been requested by John, but whether they will correct it, who knows. They should because the sections in quotes and attributed to him are not direct quotes at all and therefore not what he said.
I guess that's the press for you.

Hi all,
No idea where the talk of 20 finds came from. Not from me.
Certainly the plan was to announce all the finds during the event (the six finds we announced up to and including on the day of the event) plus anything that was brought in on the day, but it was decided to announce most of the finds during the two weeks before the event to drum up some publicity. That worked and we got a lot of feedback regarding film collections.
In advance of the event, we spoke to a few collectors who said they would bring some UK TV titles with them. I checked the titles I was given and most of these were missing, a few with question marks over them. This amounted to a total of 17 missing programmes in addition to the six titles that we eventually announced. In the end, three of the collectors weren't able to attend and one only brought a single film with him. However, it did turn out to be a missing programme. That will be announced soon I hope, but not until the end of November because I think there is more from that series to come.
Please don't read into what I have said and think it's a Doctor Who film. It isn't.
I want to be clear though that 'Film is Fabulous' is an initiative to raise awareness with collectors and the families of collectors of the vulnerability of their collections. The aim is to save film. But it's not a treasure hunt and anything that is currently missing which can be put back in an archive is just a bonus.

I've mentioned this in a different thread, but The Basil Brush Show that I announced today at Film is Fabulous is the 25th of September 1970 edition, the second episode of the new Autumn series and is, I think, the only surviving edition of that series.

Hi all,
Yes, yet another lovely discovery:
The Basil Brush Show TX: 25/09/1970
This is an original BBC Enterprises film recording in near perfect condition and has clearly defined chroma dots captured in the recording. Most editions are missing from 1970 so it's fabulous to have a new example from that year.

That is terrific news! One less bit of history lost. Cheers to all involved for keeping these reels safe. Paul, do you know if the film is going to be sent to the Library of Congress for restoration as mentioned? The Packard Campus is about 90 highway-miles south of me and I’d love another reason to go back for a visit! Tom Yes. I don't know the detail as yet, but the senior curators at the LOC are involved and organising the transport of the film. Paul
