I've found about 40 mins of a POTP radio show from 1964 with all Alan Freeman links from an old reel to reel tape...i'm trying to date it...Is there a website/database of somekind on the net?

You shouldn't really need to go to a website/database Chris, just an accurate chart compendium book will do and will give you the relevant week, Omnibus, Tony Jasper. etc.
Just run them past me. I'll date it for you. And I expect a fair few others on this site can too

From my calculations that all points to June 20th Chris, although from PJ Proby down to Elvis that sounds like Unit 2 (?) the just outside the chart section. Is it all one uninterrupted broadcast or are there cuts that you can detect?

Sunday 21st June I would think : - P.J.Proby outside the Top Ten; next, four new releases; Elvis - LP track; then the Top Ten

Yes I meant the 21st not the 20th sorry. I forgot that my chart books give the corresponding saturday, not sunday. Haven't had to look one up for a while. Yes I know that there was variation between the BBC and other charts, but it was never that much and they never differed that greatly. I've never needed to consult a website for this kind of info and have been correctly identifying chart shows like this since the late 70s (the internet was still all fields when I were a lad) Haven't got one wrong yet.

Rob, the week ending Saturday date only started in August 1969. Before that it was a Thursday.

I agree but the dates used by Record Retailer did, and these dates were used by Guinness both in the Hit Singles and Top 40 Hits books.
The explanation in the 2001 Guinness book reads as follows:
The NME charts 14 Nov 52 - 4 Mar 60 were dated w/e Friday.
The RR charts 10 Mar 60 - 28 Jul 67 were dated w/e Thursday.
The RR charts 5 Jul 67 - 30 Jul 69 were dated w/e Wednesday, they only moved w/e Sat date on 9 Aug 69.
So the first BMRB chart, announced on Tue 11 Feb 69, was dated w/e 12 Feb by Record Retailer (subsequently used by Guinness) and w/e 15 Feb by Record Mirror. And as Tony Jasper explains, there's a difference between RM and RR up to March 1962 anyway.......

Not straight away. In the Top 40 chart w/e 30 Apr 69, there were 41 records, due to a joint no 40, there was also a joint 38, 36 and 33! When BMRB took over the chart compilation, it was the first time the chart had been based on actual (panel) sales. Before that date, the positions of the chart returns were just averaged out from the various lists submitted by the record shops.

Interesting. The BMRB must have hit on an accurate way of defining sales, because they compiled the chart for many years.
