www.doctorwhonews.net/2014/05/germany-dvdbluray-130514200029.htmlAn interesting story to follow and I thought I should bring it up for any German fans that frequent here. Pandastorm Pictures is releasing DVDs for classic Doctor Who stories, but as it turns out the original dubs for many episodes are missing. They are asking the public for help in retrieving them. They are currently interested in ones from the Colin Baker and McCoy eras. Angriff der Kybermänner, Teil 1-4 (Attack Of The Cybermen, Part 1-4) Revolte auf Varos, Teil 1-4 (Vengeance On Varos, Part 1-4) Die Rache des Meisters, Teil 1, 3 (The Mark Of The Rani, Part 1, 3) Androiden in Sevilla, Teil 1, 3-6 (The Two Doctors, Part 1, 3-6) Das Amulett, Teil 1-4 (Timelash, Part 1-4) Planet der Toten, Teil 1-4 (Revelation Of The Daleks, Part 1-4) Das Urteil, Teil 1, 5, 10 (The Trial Of A Timelord, Part 1, 5, 10) Excaliburs Vermächtnis, Teil 2, 3 (Battlefield, Part 2, 3) Das Haus der tausend Schrecken, Teil 2 (Ghost Light, Part 2) Der Tod auf leisen Sohlen, Teil 2 (Survival, Part 2) Hard to imagine anything of the 6th and 7th Doctors being missing, but there it is!

Strangely, I remember seeing these episodes in German dub on a German channel that was available on the early Sky TV package. I forget what the channel was but I definitely saw the McCoy episodes. So, its possible that a fan recorded these soundtracks in the UK.

I had Silver Nemesis and Greatest Show in the Galaxy in German way back then and like a fool in 1990 or so attempted to redub them to English as the PAL West German copy was far superior to the PAL copy I had received from BBC 1s broadcast. What I discovered though was that the episodes were edited differently so the audio did not line up. I have that tape with a miss aligned English BBC1 sound track some where in the house

So much for the German Gründlichkeit! Although, I once tried to track down the German dub of this Dutch series by Paul Verhoeven and Rutger Hauer, and it was wiped too (and so was the English dub "The Adventures of Floris"). I have that tape with a miss aligned English BBC1 sound track some where in the house At some point I think VHS got two audio tracks so it's possible the original audio is still on that thing. I didn't say likely, or easy, just possible.

Around 1984 JVC added a specification to encode "hi-fi" stereo audio and embed it within the video track. So if you did standard audio dubbing onto the two regular longitudinal audio tracks, the hi-fi "tracks" are still there and higher quality anyway -- assuming the machine used for the original recording was set up for hi-fi recording.

Bizarrely I think I have most, if not all of the McCoy Episodes in German on VHS!!
As Sean said, Sky used to carry certain foreign channels in the early 90s, and after flicking through them one evening after watching (and recording) some of the Pertwees on UK Gold on the off chance there might be some more Who on a foreign channel I hit the jackpot! Time and The Rani was just starting so I hit record. At the time I think I only had Silver Nemesis, Curse of Fenric & Battlefield on VHS, so I guess I recorded everything else. Even if I couldn't understand it (I was never taught German) I at least had a visual record of the episodes. I would have to dig out my videos and check which ones I still have.
They were all omnibus editions though...
