I have a couple of questions about this show. Is Kaledioscope Publishing's book on the show still available? Also, I understand that clips were recovered from the Australian censors. What episodes were these from and how long are they? Why were they not included on the OOTU clips tape. An extract from Liar! was also missing. This featured workers gathering round a production line. Any help would be appreciated.

So far as I know the book hasn't been published yet. As a fan of OOTU I am looking forward to seeing it. What is the clips tape you refer to?

A clips tape was compiled last year and featured the closing titles from Fox and the Forest and Andover and the Android, the film sequences from Andover and surviving clips from Satisfaction Guaranteed and Liar!.

Hi We've had numerous problems with the OOTU book, including hard drive damage, and Richard's sad death, but the final proof copy is just about to go to the author Mark Ward so fingers crossed it should appear before 2004!! Chris Perry Kaleidoscope

I understand that clips were recovered from the Australian censors. What episodes were these from and how long are they? Some details on surviving clips still unclear, but for the record: Australian Censor Clips - sadly very brief, comprising a 'blink and you'll miss it' shot of a stabbing from Immortality Inc ( Season 3 ) and a 33 second 'strangulation' sequence from The Last Witness ( Season 4 ) Satisfaction Guaranteed - the complete sequence runs to approx 2.30 minutes ( and derives from the 1967 documentary series Towards Tomororrow ). It was later trimmed down to about 1 min for a feature on Robotics on BBC 2's The Late Show, and I gather that its this shortened version that does the rounds. Liar! - Yes, at least two known sequences - both of which were trimmed for appearances on The Late Show and Future Fantastic. The full extent of these clips - and the ( early 70's? ) documentary from which they were originally lifted - is unfortunately still not known. Colin

I didn't know the Satisfaction Guaranteed clip was longer. Does it continue from where the short version ends is or does it start earlier on in the scene?

I didn't know the Satisfaction Guaranteed clip was longer. Does it continue from where the short version ends is or does it start earlier on in the scene? Basically what you've seen is the 'middle' section of the sequence ( although the Late Show 'cut' has had some shots and dialogue edited out as well ). The full sequence begins with the group assembling together in the livingroom of the Belmont's house ( some voiceover here by Asimov ) and continues through to Dr Jensen's description of the robots superior 'brain' ; clip ends with with Wendy Craig's character being asked if she is still unsure about the experiment taking place in their household. About 2 and a half mins in all ( although topped and tailed by some voiceover ) Colin

To Lay A Ghost definitely exists at the BBC and has also been doing the rounds for many years on "the circuit".

Ironic that such a shameful piece of misogynistic crap exists, but The Chopper doesn't. Indeed. Most of the missing OOU sounds considerably better than this rather sordid offering.

I agree I feel that 'The chopper' was a superior entry to 'To lay a ghost'. As for the mysodgonistic undertones, I would agree that this aspect could be perceived, but bear in mind the piece was structured and delivered in a different era with a different set of values. Much of Brian Clemens work i.e. Avengers (later episodes), thriller, feature repetitive themes featuring the terrorising of central female characters. The pieces observed on their other merits though, stand up. Reading the politically correct criteria of present day into an old drama & weighing all its other merits on this is not really an effective way of judging the piece, given its historic context. 'To lay a ghost' with its crude hip joke title & some comic strip style imagery I feel enhance the sense of the time in which it was made. It does stand as a good piece of pop art, and the central theme of the seduction by a ghost remains chilling & has been used since in the cinema environment to critical acclaim. Thats what I feel about that piece anyway.
