Last weeks Slade at the BBC had their first appearance on TOTP but it was in black and white in low quality. I wonder what the story is behind this rare recording.

It's from a semi-domestic reel held at (I think) a record company as a demo for featured artists. There were two uncovered from the same point in 1971. At least one of these TOTP editions was shown complete at a Kal event a couple of years ago. These finds are listed alongside many other finds in the "Raiders 2007 onwards" thread which is permanently pinned to the top of the page for people's reference in the General TV section.

I didn't think that Slade's first TOTP appearance exists? I remember watching "Slade at the BBC" last Christmas but I don't remember "Shape Of Things To Come" from 2nd April 1970 on the show - I would dearly love to see that performance.

Where did their pre-glam performance of Martha My Dear come from?
It was after they dropped the "Ambrose" part of their name, if that helps.

Last weeks Slade at the BBC had their first appearance on TOTP but it was in black and white in low quality. I wonder what the story is behind this rare recording. The Coz I luv You shown on Slade at the BBC wasn't the 1st TOTP appearance of the track, it first appeared on 21st October 1971. The appearance used on Slade at the BBC comes from the 2nd December 1971 and NOT the recovered 18/11/71 edition, both recovered editions are held by the BFI and the BBC have copies. As stated above, these editions were recorded by record Company Phonogam and the tapes were handed to the BFI. Matthew Brannigan Slade's first TOTP appearance with Shape of things to come from 02.04.70 DOES exist, in private/ company hands at a warehouse in Milton Keynes. Richard Marple Martha my dear and wild winds are blowing are from monster music mash and come from the Bob Pratt tapes, martha was shown on TOTP2 years ago after Noddy Holder presented an edition of TOTP, Chris Cowey gave Noddy Holder a copy of Martha but not Wild Winds and wild winds are blowing was shown at Kal about 3/4 years ago. There were dozens of unseen performances of Slade, put forward for Slade at the BBC, some were used some wasn't. Hope the above helps seeing as I put Slade night together.

Great to hear that the the TOTP performance of Shape Of Things To Come still exists, and I really hope that somehow it gets seen again while we're still alive. Slade At The BBC was superb, so thanks for everyone's input. The only slight disappointment was that the TOTP performance of "Lock Up Your Daughters" wasn't included - I'd have preferred that over the Cheggers Plays Pop clip of "Give Us A Goal" any day.. it's probably one of Slade's weaker and least enjoyable songs. However, on that and "My Baby Left Me" it was refreshing to see Dave Hill being bald and proud, rather than going back to those laughable syrups..
