I noticed on another thread that this went missing for a while after it's re-broadcast in 1972 as part of the BBC 50 years celebration. I remember watching it then and enjoying it. If this is the case does anyone have the full story? It would be interesting to know what the archive status is now of other program's broadcast as part of this celebration back then

I wonder if the apparently restored version which was prepared will ever appear as a release if they sort out the copyright problems?

Do you have a link to where it was mentioned? Obviously it depends on the source, but I'd guess that it's a myth. This particular programme attracts them. I've been researching it slowly for a few years and it turns out an awful lot of what people think they know about it (particularly around the reaction to it) simply isn't true. I might write an article about it online sometime, in case it interests anyone as much as it does me. It can't have ever been properly missing. It wouldn't have gone anywhere except between the film library and wherever it is films are played out for broadcast. At worst it could have been misfiled for a time.

Can't remember which thread it was but it was a comment made when someone was recently discussing Rob Moss' avatar. Will do a search later and see if I can find it.

Really enjoyed it when I watched it in 72 as a kid, it scared the bejesus out of me, even with the watered down "down with big brother" ending

Looks like it was in one of the current long Who threads but I can't cope with going through all that stuff again without losing the will to live.

The 1954 BBC one with Cushing has the ending of the book: 'I love Big Brother'. The one which ends (in one of its two versions) with 'down with Big Brother' (and Winston then being shot) is the 1955 feature film version, which is indeed heavily watered down.

I remember the Cushing version being screened fairly recently. The first screening wasn't telerecorded, the live "repeat" a few days later was. IIRC, Cushing was far happier with the original as he felt the repeat didn't quite go as well. There was a region 1 release on DVD, but it's deleted now (sources: Amazon, IMDB) /edit: And the O'Brien version: IMDB Amazon

It's a long time ago and I suppose that I must have seen the film too at some point.

I'm open to correction but I don't think the 1955 film version has been seen since 1984 when it was shown at the NFT. This was because it was being withdrawn so that the, then new, John Hurt version could get all the publicity. The NFT screening had, I think, required special permission.

I remember the Cushing version being screened fairly recently. It was repeated by the BBC in the '90s, albeit not the fully restored version.

It was also repeated on BBC Four a few years ago - again, not the restored version.
