I recently came across some video footage of Tony Christie performing "Avenue's and alleyways" at the French Midem Festival and I thought I would have a look for more acts performing at the annual event as its seems a very important part of the music business calender - but apart from the last couple of years of the festival there seems very little footage or information about it - strange as it has been going since 1967 This is a brief overview from Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MidemCat Stevens from 1971 www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdQPm6MpIBgCaptain Beefheart & Magic Band - Sure 'nuff 'n Yes I do - Midem Festival Cannes, France 1-27-68 www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UOweeSdI2kDoes anyone have any more detailed info about this ?

There's a fair amount of MIDEM footage doing the rounds. Off the top of my head I can recall seeing performances by Lulu, Julie Driscoll, Long John Baldry, Procol Harum, the Supremes, Tom Jones and Udo Jurgens in recent years. I can also remember hearing audio of P.J. Proby's famous live rendition of "A Day in the Life".
Strictly speaking, I wouldn't class the Beefheart footage (they also perform "Electricity") as a MIDEM performance. Legend has it they borrowed their equipment from Blossom Toes and had Gary Farr and Kevin Westlake roadying.

Thanks for the information William - a great insight into what looks like a great event - i'm just suprised there's so little coverage on the net of past gatherings for such a prestigious event.

The 24/01/1968 British Gala was regarded as something of a disaster, with Long John Baldry's jaw-dropping "Nellie and the Threshing Machine" a particular lowpoint. Baldry's set could be seen in its entirety on YouTube a couple of years back.

1969 Midem report from NME (not very exciting)
The 5th dimension had a superb stage act, Sergio Mendes also
most acts only got two numbers but Gene Pitney and John Rowles got more
Acts from Britain to do well were The Equals and Leapy Lee
Aphrodite's Child also took part
Mary Hopkin was to represent Britain in the Top Disc Celebrity section (she sang "The Puppy Song" "Plaisir D'Amour" and "Those were the Days"

The Procol Harum footage is very much the exception. Most of what I've seen is of generally high quality. The V.I.P.'s footage isn't MIDEM. It's from the 1/6/67 1st Festival International de Pop Music.
