Thanks for that Paul. It's always fascinating to see these re-discovered performances to get more idea of the atmosphere and audience of the show during this period, and of course a reminder of how much priceless social and musical history dear old Auntie Beeb has wiped out.

I can clearly remember Georgie Fame's actual studio performance on Top of the Pops. It was classic BBC with George Fame and his band dressed as gangsters; all in pinstriped suits wearing trilby's and the set was made up late sixties Carnaby Street/Biba style cutout drawings of mock gangsters with their molls. Strange memory.

Great to finally see this and was most amused to see how the BBC tackled the infamous gunfight sequence! Groovy stuff! As is always the case whenever 60's TOTP footage surfaces on YouTube or on TV, it just leaves you wanting more and cursing the BBC for the shoddy way they treated that archive. BUT at least odd bits and pieces do keep surfacing at a steady rate which is more than can be said for certain other programs that get more heated debates...

God, I feel old. This was one of the first singles I bought, on CBS if I remember correctly. I could check, if I could be bothered to go up into the loft ! It was top for a number of weeks, as I recall. After forty-five years my memory might be playing tricks, but I seem to remember a studio performance which was a bit more minimal, Georgie Fame, piano and not much else.
Nice clip though.

Mr Powell performed this track in the TOTP studio just twice - this is from the 21st December 1967, which was apparently repeated on the first three editions of 1968 too. He returned for the Christmas Day 1968 show but it is highly likely that a second performance is incorrectly classed on the database as a repeat when it was fresh. It's quite an unusual presentation here, but it is often overlooked how experimental and progressive the TOTP directors could be at times

It works well... has some imagination to it (the gunfight sequence again stands out) and once again gets one wondering about other odd tricks they used on long lost performances. A fave of mine has always been Peter Noone riding with the camera on the 1965 clip - simple, but effective and it stands out. Or there's the one with Manfred Mann in 1966 with Mike D'Abo singing in Manfred's mouth!

Eh? I meant that it wasn't sanctioned by the film company, but rather a first-rate response to the film.By a stretch (or not) you could say it was in the tradition of Guthrie's 'Pretty Boy Flloyd'. The performance I remember does seem to have been a barebones, straight narrative.More Stagerlee than dancing flapper-girls.
