Aside from unlikely finds from collectors in this country that preserved episodes 2,5 and 10, and assuming ABC has been searched, is there any chance at all that there are copies of the Daleks' Masterplan in film vaults round the world?
I know it was only sold to Australia, but is there any chance they passed it on to another country?

Zero chance. Australia would have returned the prints they had to the BBC.

So if a collector didn't swipe it, and its not at ABC, then it's 100% gone for good?
It's odd, I never realised at the time what a priceless find Day of Armageddon was. If we had to have an episode swiped from the vaults, how bloody lucky are we it was from this story?!?!

Quite a while ago now, Paul Vanezis stated that he wouldn't rule out the existence of any film print, giving the not offically recorded 'Feast of Steven' as an example. He said we shouldn't read into that, that Feast had been found, but you could possibly read into that other DMP episodes had. Australia and New Zealand have possibly returned episodes/serials in recent years. There have been a few hints to this effect on this board and in Wiped. Of course until it is confirmed, they don't offically exist. Doctor Who: The Quantum Years rolls on.

If the three episodes which exist are the returned prints from ABC* then the other eight episodes may be somewhere in the UK. Or they may have been destroyed with only those three escaping. However, if any of those three are NOT from the ABC batch then it would point to more than one copy having been made (at least of some of the episodes) at some stage. Which would then raise a question over when such prints were made, for what reason, and what became of them. 1) "when such prints were made" By mid-1966, prior to Nation withdrawing the BBC's rights to sell Dalek stories, which was circa July 1966. 2) "for what reason" In preparation of selling series three to those countries who had bought season 2, who would, they hoped, continue to buy more serials. 3) "and what became of them" Who knows!

Nation stopped the sale of his Dalek stories, but not those by other writers, correct? How long did the ban last? Wasn't Masterplan still available for sale in 1974, even though no broadcaster bought it?

Does anyone know of film returns to the Australian archives from Antarctica (via Hobart) - 2-3 years ago? Would be lovely to imagine a few missing episodes amongst them?

Jon, were you commenting on a "if they exist" basis or do you think some prints were made for this purpose? I'd be interested in your considered response to the original query.
Is there any evidence anywhere that (a) more than one set of DMP prints was ever made (b) DMP found its way to any other country except Oz?

Originally in the first edition of Wiped! it was stated that episodes 5 and 10 were stored field prints and that the prints sent to ABC (episodes 1-6, 8-12) were suppressed prints. However Airlock is a stored field print so episodes 5 and 10 could be from the ABC batch but are more likely spare BBC Enterprises prints. Episode 2 was a spare print / viewing copy / cutting copy at the BBC office in Ealing. ABC confirm they do not have the prints and Damian Shanahan has thoroughly researched the Australian censors and found nothing. I haven't read Wiped 2 but I think the suppressed field thing has been discounted and all prints from The Time Meddler - Galaxy 4 at the very latest - were stored field from then on.

It's about time the BBC actually put some investment into trying to recover a past it destroyed and set a clear finders fee for a missing episode. If any prints did find their way into private hands then "please give them back for free so we can release them commercially and make thousands of pounds" just isn't prising them out the relevent hands.

The "who knows" comment is in response to if there were other copies what became of them. In reply to a) - no; and to b) no. At least in terms of evidence. In terms of conjecture, but extrapolated from available information, the answer to both is still no, at least as far as a full set goes. If the found eps 2,5 and 10 aren't part of the ABC set, then clearly those three eps did have more than one copy made. For all we know, all three could be cutting copies rather than sold for broadcast.
