Stumbling across some more of my notes i re-examined the details on "The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon on TOTP."
I wasn't sure about the source of this clip but have now found out that a copy of it resides at the BFI/NFA archive.
My question would be therfore, what sort of quality is this copy in?, and why has it not been returned to the BBC for possible transmission?

Certainly is a clearer picture. I know there's software now that would fix the 'flutter' sound. The track also needs to be slightly 'speeded up' as it's running a little slow. I emailed the link to John Dalton who was drafted in on bass. His first appearance with the band was TOTP. How cool is that ? I know he'll be delighted to see an improved version.

Am I missing something here?? Is this not a HUGE recovery?? What a find. I must be missing something though as I've noticed who posted it to YouTube. Anybody care to shed some light onto why this is going relatively un-noticed and there are ticker tape parades for tiny clips of recovered Legs & Co..??!!

This went totally beyond me Mike I'm sorry. Well if John Dalton is only seeing this now then surely this is a big ehmmmmm.......eh.....release of it??!! This would also surely bring up the whole debate again about the importance of YouTube because if something as historic a clip as this one is the only way that Mr. John Dalton can get to see it even though it's "been known about for years" is a disgrace and would call into question why a lot of these clips are returned rather than offered to the people involved first. Ah to be honest, I'm not arsed. I just want to see these clips and know that the people involved in them also get to see them before we're all pushing up the daisies.

I seem to remember this being mentioned as part of the past Raiders enitiative recoveries that were made at the time. As I recall this was found on 16mm film, just this performance sadly, as was hoping there might have been a full edition here! I tend to think that this was a export clip segment for foreign markets, later recovered as this stand alone clip in regards on 16mm film again I believe... Much as in the same way that " Wonderboy " was used in Veronica of the clips sourced by ZDF for inclusion in Disco, or Hits A Go Go of note. Now just wish that ITV had done the same with clips from Lift Off or 45' ( With Kid Jensen ) !! Hoping this assists here in regards....The search goes on...
As seen here, Ray had posted the discovery of the Leg's and Co clips on the forum here. I would not call that slipping under the radar in any way there?? Now I do remember this clip being in hot topic when found years ago now. Caused quite the commotion at the time, and spurred research into exported clips from TOTP and other shows as a result..
Cheers, Lance.

Thomas, just to clear up any confusion. John had seen the clip on YouTube before but this version is a bit clearer. He has never had a copy of it any time.

I spent a half hour speeding up the visuals, adding a smidge of brightness and synching the audio from the MONO single. Good fun. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMHfYLZS4cI

Anybody care to shed some light onto why this is going relatively un-noticed The Sunny Afternoon clip was screened at a very early MBW event though, back in the '90s. So it has been known about for a long time (albeit only in poor quality VHS so far). With regard to queries on recent finds (of the last five or six years), can I also remind people that they can browse the Raiders Of The Lost Archives / recoveries lists which are pinned to the top of the general forum for everybody's reference!

This was my initial reason for re-posting about this. It's been sitting in the BFI/NFA archive now for over 18 Years!!! and still has not been released or returned to the BBC for possible transmission. Along with The Kinks there is also a Jimi Hendrix TOTP clip on the same tape.

The BBC have had have a reference copy of the Hendrix tape for years though (albeit in poor quality VHS so I doubt it would get re-shown).
Not sure if they have the Kinks clip (possibly not) but, as regards quality, it's only been found in very poor VHS so far. I seem to remember from the original MBW screening, it was said that these clips (and others) might have originally come from the US or a European country such as the Netherlands. That was as definite as was stated at the time though. Keith Badman and John Platt were two of the people on that panel session and they are probably the people who would know more.

I received an email from John (Dalton) this evening from his new laptop. He's now seen both of the recent video clips and said "it does prove I was young once" He was very pleased and said "Thanks".
