Hi, since it recently appeared on youtube, I've been trying to identify some of the very brief glimpses of otherwise unknown Kinks footage that appeared in the 2010 Ray Davies doc "Imaginary Man". At the time it was speculated that the poor quality clip at 31.29 (direct time link here www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVYqVS_X6js&t=31m28s) shows The Kinks on Ready Steady Go: from the quality it looks like it's probably home shot off monitor 8mm film, probably from Ray's private collection, if anyone wants to look and offer a second opinion, I'd be interested to hear anyone else's thoughts. Will post more direct links to anything else unidentified soon. EDIT: sadly that direct link I provided, though accurate timing wise, doesn't link to the exact moment but a little earlier in this tightly edited sequence of brief clips. If you watch for a few seconds though, it will be obvious which clip I'm referring to: it's the poorest quality clip at 31.28.

It's obviously filmed offscreen on 8mm. Also it's running too fast. There's another clip at 32:00. The backdrop says "The new year starts" so presumably broadcast on a new year. (Your link works, you need to put a space between 28s and the close bracket to stop the bracket being added to the link.) EDIT: Presumably this: www.imdb.com/title/tt1429849/

Does anyone know how to contact Ray Davies Management? PM me if you can.

Doug Hinman's book on the Kinks indicates that they also appeared on the 31st December, 1965 show and lip-synced 'A Well Respected Man' + Pete Quaife appeared in a "pantomime skit" with Pete Townshend and Hilton Valentine.

Ray, do you not think it might make more sense to go through the Producer of the doc (and the researchers) who have presumably had access to Ray's private footage and transferred it onto a useable format? Presumably if it was used in the doc, it's now sitting - in a useable form - somewhere other than in Ray's attic.
I think you'd find they'll be more forthcoming than the man himself.

Btw, I really doubt the clip is '65, 'cos I sincerely doubt that's Dave playing along to Well Respected Man! It's just not as riffy...

That answers that question,Stephen! It's not unknown for things to get labeled "New year's party 1976",when the party started the previous year.

Well, it's clear it's one of either New Year's 64/65 or New Year's 65/66 and if the Kinks were playing 'Respected Man' on the latter, it's quite likely they'd be played 'All Day' (or 'You Really Got Me') on the former. I just can't imagine Dave making those faces or playing quite such a frantic riff for 'Respected Man'!

That's also an idea. I may try both. Do you know who the producers were. If you do can you send me a PM with details?

I doubt very much Ray Davies would hand over any RSG footage in whatever form he has it because if he did, wouldn't Dave Clark then be able to swoop in claiming "ownership"? The Kinks did not get along at all well with the Dave Clark Five and especially hated Clark himself.
This is the big problem with RSG. Dave bought the film cans containing RSG footage then claimed he owned exclusive copyrights, which both Vicki Wickham (producer) and Michael Lindsay Hogg (director) have stated he has no rights to do. Rediffusion going out of business of course didn't help and look at the mess surrounding that archive! Who - legally and technically - should own the rights to RSG? I could buy a film can containing BBC archive footage but legally I wouldn't be able to do anything with it apart from watch it privately, so how on Earth was Dave Clark able to get away with RSG? I doubt very much he'd had done a major deal buying all the rights with whoever legally owned RSG when he bought the footage.

Oh! It's Julien Temple. Ok, that might be trickier than first thought!
IMDB has conflicting credits for lesser members of the team. Why not watch the thing on youtube and get the names you want from there? It'll be the Researchers you want. They'll have done the work on getting the clips together.

I have SO been trying to get an address for Julien Temple. Never succeeded. Might just send a letter addressed to 'Julien Temple, Bridgwater, Somerset', and see if that works..... :/
