I was watching Irish TV's (RTE) 'Reeling in the Years' the other day (same format as the beebs' The Rock and Roll Years', only with an Irish slant), and the episode devoted to 1973 concluded with the Thin Lizzy TOTPs clip of 'Whiskey in the Jar introduced by Noel Edmonds. Just got me wondering, did TOTPs ever get shown on RTE in Ireland. You can probably see where I'm going with this one...If so, would they have kept any? I'm new here btw, so apologies if this is a daft question...

Thank you!
I'm suspecting that there probably isn't anything to find at RTE, as TOTPs was based around the UK charts... yet stranger things have happened?

No, TOTP wasn't broadcast by RTE. Some local programming was produced (now that would be interesting to see) and they imported shows like Beat Club in the 1980s.

I suppose some parts of Eire received TV signals from NI?

I have some episodes of Top of the Pops that I recorded from RTE while on holiday in the eighties. They used to join BBC1 at 7.30 on Thursdays. Sometimes you would catch a glimpse of the BBC globe at the start as they faded across. This was in the republic of Ireland so I assume it would've been available across the country.

Now, if they were doing it in the 60's or 70's....I'd much love to look at RTE's library....any help or suggestions welcome.

The obvious place to start, Ray, would be: www.rte.ie/archives/Here's a screenshot from one of my recordings for anyone who wasn't aware of TOTP being broadcast in Ireland: Nuacht is an Irish language news bulletin. Garda Patrol is similar to Police 5/Crimewatch.

I had a look - I will have to put a request in as a researcher by email - seem to have little-to-no holdings published online.

Sadly, RTE2 didn't start broadcasting until November 1978 so there's little chance of them having any "missing" TOTPs - but there's always the possibility that RTE1 (launched on New Years Eve 1961) used clips in some of their shows, like ZDF used to. The RTE2 opening night introduction is available to view here: www.rte.ie/archives/exhibitions/681-history-of-rte/705-rte-1970s/139376-rte-2-opening-night/Interesting how they say "RTE2 will be bringing you the best of BBC, ITV and other first rate programming"

I was also wondering about home recordings, though I'd figure sales of VCRs took longer to get going in the Republic. Mind you, there'd have been a big incentive-given censorship issues-to tune into, and tape the BBC and ITV,I'd've thought?

This all sounds really encouraging...so in theory, there could be missing UK TV, albeit perhaps clips, rather than whole shows, going back to the 1960s, potentially sitting in RTE's archives? ...and not just pop music TV? Seeing as RTE have been around since 1961.
I'd always assumed that being the UK's closest neighbour, Ireland would have been 'checked' long ago...or maybe it already has?
Now dare I even mention the words 'Dr' and 'Who'?!!

I have a big in with the RTE archive but it's a closed shop mainly. I'm working on it though.
