WOW. So now we know! I don't think many people saw that coming!
I LOVE The Aztecs and will be repurchasing it in March to get my hands on the Galaxy Four ep. Will it be containing the same special features as before plus this episode?
Shame Reign isn't coming out in time for Christmas but that'll be my first dvd purchase of the new year!

lCan I trade the DVD I already purchased in for a copy of the new one and pay a nominal fee? Then the bbc can go to the hassle of selling my old DVD on ebay. Thanks!

Not another "special edition" .... Why?? Are the beeb trying to make up for missing the better part of twenty-odd serials by reissuing a dozen or so (do the maths).... Why not invest the money in animating the missing ones, instead of cobbling together a bunch of crappy "special features" (most of which I don't watch anyways) and calling it a "Special Edition" ?!? The Tomb of the Cybermen, Vengeance on Varos (for region 2) I get... But The Three Doctors, Carnival of Monsters... Can someone please enlighten me as to why?? Or have I already kind of hit the nail on the head!!

Or have I already kind of hit the nail on the head!! I believe that there is a substantial improvement in the restoration of the actual episodes; they've also provided a few new extras the best of course being 'Galaxy 4'. Short of a 'Lost in Time' SE (meaning you'd have to buy those again) it's the best option! As I recall, people moaned about the re-issue of 'The Seeds of Death', but when they saw the new restoration, there weren't nearly so many moans... Paul

Paul I should have included "Seeds" in the "I can understand why" list.. Lol Granted, some did definitely look better, Spearhead from Space and The Robots of Death fall into that category... From memory the Aztecs looks great on DVD!! But The Time Meddler not so great (archive material being the obvious reason) has technology progressed enough to clean that one up a bit more? It would fit better with The Galaxy 4 stuff, as they are consecutive serials (albeit with a break in seasons)

And If possible try to recreate the "next time" trailer (that I've only read about) that supposedly followed after "Checkmate" (??)Those are the kind of special features and Easter eggs I like.. Kind of like the "Distributed by BBC Enterprises" Easter Egg on the original Aztecs DVD release

I think its disgusting. Whats next? ANOTHER re-release of Tomb of the Cyberman for Underwater Menace ep 2?. Bbc are taking the piss... It's been over 10 years since The Aztecs was released on DVD. As already stated, the restoration of the episodes can be noticeably improved upon. It's a practical and perfectly reasonable thing to do. Why not present the episodes in the best possible way? There'll always be the people who complain about restorations not being good enough and the others who complain about revisiting them and making a better job of them. In the general scheme of things a re-release is not a biggie now is it?

I'm going to be buying the DVD release of "Galaxy 4" part 3. The fact that it comes with a restored "The Aztecs" as an extra bonus is fine by me. That's five eps plus VAM for the same price as The Sontaran Experiment plus VAM and Black Orchid plus VAM were at the time.
Do the math. I've no complaints.

I think its disgusting. Whats next? ANOTHER re-release of Tomb of the Cyberman for Underwater Menace ep 2?. Bbc are taking the piss... How did you guess? ;D That will be the Extra Special Edition! The new release of The Aztecs probably wouldn't get as much attention or make as much a profit on its own without Air Lock. That missing episode is being used as leverage for people to buy a story they already have on DVD, and possibly VHS as well. If you only want Air Lock, then that comes to about one dollar for each minute of that episode.

I don't quite understand the negativity here.
It seems to me like a good way for 2 Entertain to keep the DVD's profitable which increases the chances of animated reconstructions. It'll be worth it in the long run and I can dream of having a dvd of each story, on individual DVD's on my shelf.

Why not invest the money in animating the missing ones, instead of cobbling together a bunch of crappy "special features" (most of which I don't watch anyways)... So you admit to not really watching the extras, but you can expertly label them as being "crappy"? Well, I'm sure that all of us who work very hard on them really appreciate your valuable insight into the matter.
