I heard on the radio a couple of days ago that British Gas were offering free loft insulation for older folk and were now also adding free loft clearance into the bargain. As the only realistic place for finding missing episodes is in the loft of people who stored them there many years ago and have long since forgotten about their existance,it would be a good idea to try and liaise with British Gas to let us know if they find any film prints.I doubt if they would pay much attention to an individual request but if it came from the BBC or an approved orginisation then who knows! I would also suggest a "finders fee" and perhaps an article in any newsletter that BG sends its staff.

I'm afraid it's a poor idea for one big reason. Would require British Gas to snoop around people's lofts. Not sure that would go down well. Loft clearance for the purposes of a 3rd party could be construed in a rather negative way. Although I think it's a brilliant idea for finding missing episodes on tapes, it may not go down well with certain people.

Virtually every ex BBC employee who could have something has been contacted - in various ways. Collectors or hoarders (if any) would probably store things better. If there was a missing episode forgotten in a loft somewhere you've really got to wait until the house changes hands and the loft is cleared before, or after, the sale. It may then end up on Ebay, in a second hand shop or at a car boot sale. That's assuming it isn't just binned.

Maybe the idea should be to contact house clearance companies and ask for first looks at any film cans they receive.

Maybe the idea should be to contact house clearance companies and ask for first looks at any film cans they receive. Its an old idea but a perfectly good one! Most towns have an auction house that deals with house clearances etc. It can't hurt to go in and introduce yourself and mention old film prints in general.
