Brian Epstein, sometimes very naive when it came to the Beatles' finances, was incredibly astute with that one. For a relative honest manager, he gave them a right screwing.

Plus, to be specific, The Beatles were signed to EMI subsidiary Parlophone, which Universal have been commanded to sell off amidst competition rule concerns. Which means The Beatles' label will no longer be part of EMI, or their assets will have to be excluded from the sale or bought back. Or.... The new EMI could just sell directly to Apple. Then there's the question of receiving the Parlophone name from all CDs, DVDs, etc.
All of these considerations are probably very prevalent reasons for a lack of movement. Or apparent movement.

Brian Epstein, sometimes very naive when it came to the Beatles' finances, was incredibly astute with that one. For a relative honest manager, he gave them a right screwing. The Beatles trusted Brian Epstein because he treated them fairly. The sorts of lucrative deals that groups have since managed to secure were not common then but he started the ball rolling in that direction. If any deliberate screwing took place, it wasn't by Brian against The Beatles. It would have been by those around them. He may have been a bit naive in certain respects business-wise but we can only say that with the benefit of hindsight because better has been done since.

No I came runner-up to two different people, by two points in 1985 (aged 16) and one-and-a-half points in 1990. To be honest now, there are people who know much more than I, but I'm still quite handy I think. That's just as well, if the same person had beaten you twice, I would have said he must be the best person for the job. 2nd place isn't bad for a 16 year oldl Mind you I bet the winner was relieved not to lose to some skinny spotty young know it all teenager! ;D At the Kal event in June I got chatting to Mike Read. I mentioned I met him at Thorpe Park in 1980, at a Roadshow....he said 'you were that little boy who knew everything about the Beatles weren't you!"

This from The Guardian ...
Valuable EMI assets Universal will have to offload include the historic Parlophone record label – bar the Beatles – but also the British company's half share in the perennially popular Now! That's What I Call Music compilation series and its operations in 10 other European countries.
I read in Mojo, I think it was, that EMI/Universal would be hanging on to The Beatles. Parlophone was an independent label formed initially in Germany, which was then taken over by The Columbian Gramophone Company, which later became EMI. It became fully absorbed into EMI in 1973. So as I see it, Universal/EMI gets to keep The Beatles, but loses the likes of Kylie ...

Brian had himself written into the Beatles contracts in such a way that even after he was no longer representing them, he still received a percentage. He got his 25% management fee, which is what he was due, but he also got a percentage of the publishing income, to which he, on the face of it, as this is a separate issue from managing the group, was not entitled. Hence my comment. But true, he was no Don Arden ...

Lots of great points here, the lack of a promos video is a genuine mystery. The quality of many of the promos in the Anthology varies so much. The beauty and depth of Paperback Writer/Rain contrasts so much with We Can Work Out and Something. Clearly some of this is down to the original quality of the film, but I feel sure that restoration could be applied to these clips and they could be enjoyed in glorious HD on say, a handy Blu Ray disc? I work for "embattled retailer" HMV and for the last 5 years there has been SOME Beatles product for Xmas released, but this years MMT is probably the best visual product since the Help! boxset from 2007. On an Epstein front, how amazing would a DVD release of the Arena documentary on him be? bound to be some extra interview footage they could chuck in...

On an Epstein front, how amazing would a DVD release of the Arena documentary on him be? bound to be some extra interview footage they could chuck in... In my opinion, that would be a great thing to do, especially as the last re-broadcast on BBC FOUR a few years back was severely edited down.
