Does anyone recall the visits they used to regularly show every Xmas morning on the BBC c.1965 - 70. I recall Rolf Harris and Leslie Crowther amongst others?
I wondered if these were live or were any known to have been recorded and exist? They were very moving shows, O/B electronic cameras as I recall.

The Mausoleum Club had a few references to these on the 'Unforgettable' thread, trying to place the Crowther hospital-visit clip on the episode devoted to him,as well as trying to remember if ITV had had a go c. 1982 with Alan Freeman.

I remember watching those in the '60s as well, Alan. I believe Rolf Harris took it on later in the '70s although I only can recall the ones with Crowther. Good to see that at least one edition survives, even if it isn't from the period we recall most. Does anyone know if there are any earlier examples existing than 1973? I'd be curious to know.

I think Rolf must have been doing it earlier, 'round about 1970? I do have a fairly clear, if fragmentary memory of him doing a Hospital accompanied by Coogee Bear: I don't recall Coogee being a feature of his shows in the latter part of the seventies. I can't find any complete listing of the Rolf Harris Show (didn't Kaleidoscope do a Light Entertainment archive guide?), but the lostshows guide lists a missing episode tx'd on New Years Eve 1969, and others tx'd on 19th December and Boxing Day 1970, obviously part of a weekly run: the hospital visit may have been part of the latter, or perhaps an existing Christmas Day 1969 edition? (Rolf was at number 1 at the time, with Two Little Boys)

Yes, could be. Lost Shows lists "A Merry Morning" as missing 1970 and 71 editions (no mention of anything in 1972) but 1973 to 1980 appear to be complete. I seem to recall it being called "Meet The Kids" earlier on though. All these are presumably missing though and there is no entry on the database for these.

There was a 'Rolf at Christmas' special in 1979,though this was from a school rather than a hospital or children's home.
I notice that the 79 show is held at the BFI,though it's not listed on IMDB,which does have a 'Rolf at Christmas' from 1981.All the Rolf Harris Shows from 79 are 'missing'.

Yes so from this it looks like Leslie Crowther presented the earlier one's and Rolf Harris the later one's which is how i remembered them.

These visits to children's hospitals were later extended to other Bank Holiday's. I have clear memories of Rolf Harris talking to a young boy patient about his favourite programme which was Doctor Who. Rolf asks he remember's the Doctor's last encounter with the Daleks. Rolf explained the Doctor and his companions had followed the Daleks to their home planet Skaro. The encounter ended in a massive battle between the Daleks. Asked if he would like to see it again the boy nodded. The epic battle from episode 7 of the Evil of the Daleks was then shown ending in a massive explosion. Return to Rolf who said "Good news for all Doctor Who fans as that story will be shown in it's entirety in a few weeks on BBC1". I am not certain but I believe this Meet the kids "episode" was shown on Bank Holiday Whit Monday 1968. However I have never seen this mentioned in any other Doctor Who documentation. Am I the only sad s*d to have watched this broadcast of Meet the Kids? Does any one have any old Radio Times to confirm whether my memory is genuine or at fault?

I googled and found 'A Spoonful of Sugar from Stoke Mandeville' BBC1 25/12/69,with Michael Aspel and Sheila Tracy.
Were these shows actually live? I'm surprised that copies of some survive, though I get it that live shows can be recorded.

The rerun of Evil Of The Daleks began on June 8th. I did a search on Genome for Rolf Harris in 1968, and there is a big gap between May 21st and August 18th where Harris doesn't seem to have appeared at all in any BBC shows. The shows on or before May 21st (where your memory might come from) are not of the "meet the kids" variety. I also had a look at the BBC listings for Whit Monday itself, and there are no "Meet the Kids"-type shows at all.
