Two things come to mind.Back in the early 80's before I had a video-recorder,I found I could actually pick up BBC1 transmissions on my dad's stereo amplifier on VHF.Although there was a certain amount of hiss in the background,it produced a clear bass-end signal.I used this to record soundtracks to the Monkees and Doctor Who directly onto a Yamaha cassette machine connected to the amp.Did anyone else have a similar experience?Secondly,in the late 1980s I stayed with my sister in Union City which is a town very close to San Francisco. At the time one of the local Bay Area TV stations was showing Hartnell episodes on consecutive nights and I remember seeing the Rescue and the first few parts of the Romans.I suppose these local West Coast TV stations have been checked for their archives?Obviously due to the popularity of Doctor Who in the 80's I suppose missing episodes wouldn't be residing in one of these obscure TV stations?

Only the 17 complete (i.e. no missing eps) Hartnell stories aired in the US, from 1985 onwards. The San Fran channel you refer to was probably KQED, channel 9.

And some whole eps like Tomb of the Cybermen never aired in the US - I only have seen it as a DVD release. Unfortunately anything in the US at this point could be for lost episodes a one off reel of 16mm which the owner either doesn't know what they have or just not interested in returning it. StevenS has been looking, so someone is actively looking. Remember the oldest broadcasts for Who were in 1971 and were Pertwee eps.

It would be nice if some more Pertwees could be found on videotape in colour (albeit in the converted NTSC format) Did all the Pertwee era get converted to NTSC, before the Beeb started wiping and reusing the transmission tapes?

Yes, they all were - except IOD. Spearhead was supplied on film. There were reports of The Daemons being aired in '91 in colour a while back, but nothing came of it.

Must have been on the West Coast ~ nothing I can recall in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Delaware....
