Does anyone know if this promo film of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" is the one that was shown on the missing TOTP'S show from 30/4/70. I think it was the only episode where it was shown , this particular clip is out of sync at the start of the song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBq1JFra92c30-4-70: Presenter: Tony Blackburn (Wiped) (1) NORMAN GREENBAUM – Spirit In The Sky (and charts) (3) ENGLAND WORLD CUP SQUAD – Back Home ® * (28) JULIE FELIX – If I Could (El Condor Pasa) (NEW) ALAN PRICE – Sunshine And Rain (NEW) BOBBIE GENTRY – If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody (29) RUFUS THOMAS – Do The Funky Chicken (danced to by Pan’s People) (27) THE MOVE – Brontosaurus ® (10) CUFFLINKS – When Julie Comes Around (crowd dancing) (NEW) BARRY RYAN – Kitsch (NEW) TOM JONES – Daughter Of Darkness (23) ROGER WHITTAKER – I Don’t Believe In If Anymore (NEW) ROOT & JENNY JACKSON – So Far Away (crowd dancing) (19) THE HOLLIES – I Can’t Tell The Bottom From The Top ® (1) NORMAN GREENBAUM – Spirit In The Sky (video)

My recollection from that time was the same video was played every week which didn't include Norman Greenbaum. I remember wondering what he actually looked like. I also remember the Barry Ryan performance. I got my Mum to buy me that record

O/T but related. Gary Jordan informs me that the BBC have four promos that were meant to be shown on TOTP from 1970. Only one, Frijid Pink's 'House of the Rising Sun' got an airing.

Could the youtube video originally be from the US show "Something Else" (2nd August 1970 edition)?

Ah the great Barry Ryan his tunes were just so..... BIG! The orchestra on Kitsch sounds fantastic! I love the bit where he gets them doing a sort of rock 'n roll bit. Go, go, go, GO! I absolutely love those 60s pop songs recorded in the days when all they had to do was pick up the phone and order any number of jobbing classical musicians for the sessions of even the most obscure artists. A truly golden era of British recording studios, performers, musicians and arrangers. I'm on a bit of a Decca / Deram & Philips / Fontana 66-69, Mike Hurst and Arthur Greenslade tip at the moment. Now there's a niche! lol I found a great site for searching music by arrangers, www.45cat.com If you haven't had a look yet, I can thouroughly recommend it.

I seem to recall that on the "One Hit Wonder" programme a few years back they showed a video of a guy driving around in a milk float when "Spirit in the Sky" was played ! I'll dig out my recording and have a look.

I seem to recall Pans' People in mini skirts were use on Spirit in the Sky dont know what weeks though? You might be thinking of when the song was revisited a few years later (1973?) - can't recall for sure offhand but think it might have been on the 10 Years Of programme, where Pan's People danced to it. The "milkman" film might be the insert from Disco 2, Andy (where Greenbaum was featured - he was a milkman at one point!).
