Hello Again Everyone,
The current thread in regards to the earliest ( extant ) known home video recordings, got me to thinking....
In regards to what might be the earliest known home-professional Off Air (TV) Audio recording ( as yet known ) to be in existence?
Just something I was wondering about of late.
Thoughts?
Cheers, Lance.

Shall I kick off? I think the earliest thing off the TV I still have are the cassettes of audio from the first TX's of the last series of 'Monty Python' from November (?) 1974.

The obvious place to start would be with Doctor Who: I think I'm right in saying that The Roof of the World (episode 1 of Marco Polo, tx 22/02/64) is the earliest extant Who audio recording, and that there are at least two discrete recordings. A quick look in the BBC and ITV Drama Guides doesn't suggest any earlier than this (although we know at least one of the guys who recorded Marco Polo claims to have recorded the first story three months before).

My cassettes are in the loft and I have never catalogued them. I know I have one or two of the later Apollo missions recorded from BBC TV plus a selection of TV theme tunes. [Update]: I've just found this scan of one of the cassette boxes... No longer much of interest on there, now that all the Tightropes have been located. I wonder what the adverts are though? It's tape 12 from April 1972, so logically I should have 11 older ones somewhere.

Songs from Lunch Box were released on LP at the time, so these tracks might be from this LP. You can get the LP on Ebay from time to time.

Didn't Peter Sellers have some TV audios from the late '40s / early '50s of some of his early appearances recorded on to 78rpm records? Part of what was found in his archive. I seem to recall Morecambe & Wise had some similar recordings as well. These would be among the earliest TV audios.

I know I could be in for a long wait, been trying since the 70's actually, but I always thought that maybe someone out there may have recorded on audio what would be considered the holy grail of a find if someone had taped anything from the first Quatermass serial. We used to have a Grundig tape reel to reel and we used to record things from tv and keep them on for ages, but this was in the early 60s. When I was asking around for Quatermass audio recordings in the 70s well before video, one guy actually wrote to me and said he used to have Quatermass and the Pit tv serial on sound only, but erased it after some time !

I am inclined to agree Philip that The Quatermass Experiment would indeed be one of the foremost 'grails' of off air audio recordings. I would feel just as strongly about discovering The Road or The creature by Kneale or a complete run of audios of A for Andromeda. Any of these would make me deliriously happy, but I suppose time is not on our side with this.

On this side of the pond, I personally have some reels dating from 1955, but I know there are older ones that are extant.
Probably the most significant thing I've found was a high-quality audio recording of Elvis Presley's 2nd "Stage Show" performance, from February of 1956... and believe it or not, it was taped by someone who was a fan of the Dorsey Brothers, that just wanted to have a tape of one of their weekly TV shows!
