What has survived of the BBC's cricket coverage in the sixties? There was some nice colour tv footage of the Ashes 1968 used in the recent D'Oliveira documentary, but apart from that, all I can recall seeing is some filmed stuff of a couple of series which used to get shown occasionally during Peter West's rain intermissions. They were filmed with an overdubbed 'commentary' by John Arlott and obviously faked sounds of falling wickets - as though they'd originally been shot in silent!
My particular interest - a very arcane one - is to find out if there is any record of Gary Sobers bowling in his 'chinaman' style which he had to abandon in I think 1966 after a shoulder injury.

Brian, There are all manner of bits and pieces on various BBC videos including one called 'Cricket in the 60's' released in the 1990's. However in relation to your specific interest just a few months back I saw a clip on a Richie Benaud all-time XI tv show here in Australia which included a fleeting glimpse of Sobers bowling [Jim parks was keeping so I surmise that it was a BBC 2 Cavaliers match of 1967 or 1968] in b/w and If memory is correct he is bowling from the back of his hand. There is much footage [the 1963 series comes to mind] of him bowling so I think it is a fair bet that even if my memory is faulty that something survives.

Thanks for this info. I had it in the back of my mind that Sobers had sustained a shoulder injury around 1966 which ended his wrist spinning, although he occasionally still bowled finger spin. I'll keep an eye out for video coverage now that I know that some has survived!

Hi. I was wondering if anyone knew if there was anyway to find coverage of county cricket matches shown in the 80s and 90s? I've been looking for some for a while. There are some on youtube which I've seen. I'm particularly looking for Benson and Hedges Cup, Natwest Trophy and Sunday League matches from that era. If anyone could help I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Lots of Test Match Cricket and Gillette Cup matches were also covered by ITV (especially from 1964-1969)(likewise with Wimbledon Tennis), Michael Parkinson was the main presenter with commentary provided by Ian Wooldridge, Sir Len Hutton, Henry Blofeld and Jim Laker. ITV held the rights to the Gillette Cup and the only domestic cricket shown on the BBC was the International Cavaliers matches on BBC2 on Sundays prior to 1969 [when the JPL started] (there is on YouTube from 8th May 1966 a match between Somerset vs Rothmans X1 International Cavaliers) [This match features Garry Sobers bowling Chinamen] www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N77TIGZqzc also County Championship matches featuring Glamorgan when they played at home. BBC did also show highlights on Grandstand of England's 1968 tour to the West Indies with Denis Compton commentating on their matches [as featured on the BBC VHS Alan Knott cricket legend]. ITV during the 1970s and 1980s covered Roses matches on a regional basis (occassionally Nationwide). I very much doubt any ITV footage (especially the 1960s) exists in their archives. Hope this helps.

I would have thought there is plenty of cricket in the BBC archives, particularly home test matches, but also Gillette Cup, B & H Trophy, etc.. I remember seeing a clip of a 60s test match on A Question of Sport, and it was just a couple of deliveries from a completely uneventful passage of play. This led me to believe they probably had the entire match stored. There is a clip on youtube of Mike Proctor taking a hat-trick for Glos v. Hants in a B & H match in the 70s, and I know the BBC have the famous Lancs v. Glos Gillette Cup match from 1971, which finished around 9 o'clock in the evening. Laker's 19-90 test v. Australia in 1956 appears to be available, though when shown it usually seems to be as part of a Newsreel report with some of the commentary being lost because of the voiceover.

The BBC took over the rights of the Gillette Cup in 1970 from ITV, Jim Laker's 19 wicket haul is taken from the 1956 Sports Review of the Year with Len Martin doing the voiceover.

If I were you I'd try the Association of Cricket Statisticians. Despite the name, the remit also includes history:
acscricket.com
One of their members will surely have the lowdown on surviving coverage.
The only Gary Sobers coverage I can remember seeing from that early is of his batting - six sixes in an over against the bowling of (IIRC) Robin Nash at Swansea, from around 1968. It gets trotted out on the BBC from time to time.

Grandstand had billed into their schedules 31st August 1968 coverage of the County Championship match Glamorgan vs Nottinghamshire which included Garry Sobers hitting the 6 sixes of Malcolm Nash at the St Helens Ground in Swansea with Wilfred Wooller commentating. genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/bbcone/london/1968-08-31

Sky Sports seems to have complete access the BBC archive for their Cricket channel. They don't broadcast complete highlights but these clips regularly appear in their homemade documentaries. They've even started keeping the BBC commentators!

Although it was pure luck it was broadcast at all. Grandstand had their footage, and told BBC Wales to stop recording at tea.
However the story is that BBC Wales had several new staff, so decided to go on a bit longer for practice; presumably they planned to wipe and reuse the tape afterwards...
The commentator was a championship-winning captain of Glamorgan, so it's possible he thought it worth going on.
Good article on it here www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/counties/2657611/Garry-Sobers-six-sixes-recalled-40-years-on-Cricket.html

Arlott of course didn't make the common mistake of referring to the Chinaman as 'the left-hander's googly' which is a mistake often made by simpletons and quiz masters. I went mad in the pub when I disputed that answer to "what do you call a left-hander's googly?"; I correctly answered "googly" and people thought I was crazy. Bitter, moi? Since you ask, I am left handed and used to throw in the odd Chinaman. Particularly useful against left-handed batsmen of course.
